Has Kirani James ever run a 500m or 600m indoors?

Unless its undocumented, he hasn't. Also considering how rarely those events are run now, and Kirani just started indoors in 2010 when he came to Alabama

in any case, running a 600 would probably be a stretch for James, who at least through this far in his career looks more like a 200/400 guy than a 400/800 one.

So the 500m/600m distances are not common races on the indoor collegiate circuit?

Since those events are not contested in the NCAA Championships, it is highly unlikely they would be included in collegiate meets.

I guess I'm confusing college track with high school track? My knowledge of indoor track is very limited. The men's collegiate record at 600m was set in 2005. The 500m record was set just last year.

Wisconsin regularly runs the 600 indoors; it is part of the Big Ten Indoor Championship meet; last year the men ran it a total of 22 times (counting each time an athlete ran it (but not counting heats).

The 500 is run very often in the northeast but rarely outside of that Alot of the big schools have athletes run the 500 at the New Balance Colliget meet in NY. I have rarely seen the 600 (I think the Big 12 has a 600y dash as the conference meet though)
The 600 is common for the High school PSAL leauge in NYC.

But still they are both very un common events accross the board

David Verburg ran 1:01.29 in the 500 on Friday at the Armory.
