Happy birthday today (Tuesday) to two Olympic gold medalists. One is still alive today at the age of 81. The other died at the age of 54.

Both these athletes competed in the same event, but not at the same Olympic Games.

The older of the two was born 138 years ago this day and became a lawyer, a coach, and a writer. The younger athlete was a professional football player as well as a rodeo cowboy and movie stuntman.

Our birthday athletes won a total of three Olympic gold medals. Both athletes won their Olympic medals in Europe.

Massachusetts and Texas are the states connected with our birthday people.

You need not worry about the hurdles or the field events when trying to recall these names.

Fifty-six years separate their two Olympic experiences.

Grover Cleveland was our president when the first athlete won two Olympic gold medals.

Dean Smith got a gold in the short relay in 1952 and was a movie stuntman. He even had a few lines in "Ulzana's Raid."

Happy birthday today to Tom Burke and Dean Smith. Nice job, LopenUupunut and KDFINE. Burke won the first Olympic 100 and the 400 (he won the 400 four days before winning the 100). There was no four by 100 relay in 1896. That was not held until 1912.

Dean Smith also ran the Olympic 100 meters. He placed fourth in the 1952 Helsinki final. You probably remember that that was a very close race. The first four finishers were all timed in 10.4 (10.79 to 10.84). Of course Smith won his gold medal on the winning four by 100 relay.
