Combined Divisions for Ohio HS CC teams

Postby runohio » Sat Jan 12, 2013 3:45 pm

From Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors Meeting - The Board approved a recommendation from an OHSAA committee to change the divisional tournament assignment process for cross country so that a school’s girls and boys teams will be in the same division.
Beginning in fall 2013, the girls and boys enrolments will be added together and divided in half in order to determine the enrolment number (and subsequent tournament division) for that school in cross country. Currently, divisional alignment is determined separately for girls and boys.

This headline is more than a little misleading.

To be clear - Ohio will continue to have three divisions in cross-country. The new rule - combining same school ENROLLMENTS and dividing in half - is intended to minimize, if not eliminate, a boys team and girls team from the same school being assigned different district/regional race sites.

And single-sex schools presumably do not have their enrollments halved!

I don’t think the heading is misleading they are combining school enrollment of both boys and girls to have the school compete in one division (the same for both boys and girls at a school no mater what the enrollment is for a single sex) This will be the only sport in Ohio that will combined enrollments to determine a division for the team. A school could have 200 more of one sex than the other and the sex with the lower enrollment could be moved up to a higher more competitive division based on the enrolment of another sex. NO cross country coach should be in favor of this as cross country is the only sport the OHSAA is applying this rule. How is this fair to a school that might be move up a division based on a higher enrollment of the opposite sex. Cross Country is not a co-ed sport. What’s next - Track and Field?!

Again, no divisions are being combined in Ohio XC.

Glad I could clear that up...,

I think you are missing my point of my post – The OHSAA will be combining the enrollment of both the boys and girls at a school to determine the school's division for cross country.

There is not enough room on the “Subject” area to print – “Ohio high school girls and boys enrolments will be added together and divided in half in order to determine the enrolment number to determine team Division.”

I apologize if I mislead you or anyone else.

I understand what you MEANT, and as a coach here in Ohio I happen to agree with you(though I know that state's intentions are well-meaning, with so many boy/girl single coach situations).

I'm curious though, if you(or anyone else) researched the subject as to how many programs will actually get bumped UP due to this?

There will be a number of schools moving up and a number moving down…which will cause a problem for those school affected…I don’t think anyone looked at the affects before the vote by OHSAA…

Here is a site which has some info of interest - http://www.yappi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248492

A few posts –

“If we had implemented this recommendation for the 2012 season, the most glaring change would be that Tippecanoe boys might've been in DII (they're right on the edge at 326.5), and we'd be talking about Sam Wharton as DII individual champion and possibly the Tippecanoe boys as DII team champion (it would've been very close with Woodridge). “

“Based on those estimates, there could be schools with boys enrollments as low as 272 moving up to Division 1. There could also be school with boys enrollments as high as 362 moving down to Division 2. Will be interesting what the general reaction is as word gets out. Wow.”

Alot of "coulds" and "mights" there. Someone needs to crunch the numbers and toss out some hard stats.

Incidentally, I have a hard time shedding tears for a boys Division 3 team going from 175 to 178 because of split enrollments, and as a result gets bumped to Division 2, while a Division I school with 400 boys has to compete against schools with 1500

Here's Ohio's boys division splits(by enrollment)

Division Enrollment
I 338 and more
II 177 to 337
III 176 and less

Agreed, maybe the OHSAA should have looked at the numbers to see how this would affect teams.

I didn’t want to make it personal but I coach at a high school which has nearly 250 more girls than boys. The DII boy’s team in the last 4 years won 2 District Championships and was runner up once…they would move up to DI and would then be in the middle of the pack for DI schools. I have a friend at another school whose boy’ team ran in the DII State Championships this year and would be DI next year with this new rule and based on their times would be lucky to make the Regionals…

I am sure there are others, and some teams will move down a division which will upset the smaller schools.

This is something the OHSAA should have looked at…which to my knowledge they have not.

I think coach on http://www.yappi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248492 is looking into this….
