HOF and Ted WilliamsIt's that time of year - people votin in and out the BB HOF peoples. If you have never read the article from Esquire mag "What Do You Think of Ted Williams Now?", you should right that wrong and read it.
Re: HOF and Ted Williamsforgot to include that it is :
"Regarded (by whom I'm unsure) as perhaps the finest piece of sportswriting on record"
Re: HOF and Ted Williamsone of the worst hack-writing hit jobs I've ever seen.
We're supposed to think less of Williams because he turned into a grumpy old man?! The mind boggles. Williams isn't even No. 1 in the crotchety-old-man department. Check this out, which I first read in junior high in '61, re one Ty Cobb. You never forget a story like this one (I'm amaazed it's available online!). http://articles.latimes.com/1985-08-05/ ... _1_ty-cobb And a better-written story too: <<..I looked at him and felt a chill. Cobb, sitting there haggard and unshaven in his pajamas and a fuzzy old green bathrobe at 1 o'clock in the morning, wasn't fooling. "Let's not," I said. "You shouldn't be anywhere tonight but in bed." "Don't argue with me!" he barked. "There are fee-simple sons-of-bitches all over the country who've tried it and wish they hadn't." >>
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsWow, what a load of crap. The writing is so dreary that I got worn out and quit.
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsKind of Ty Cobb story:
I'm at a running club holiday party, and some guy is in a side room looking at stuff on the wall. I make a snarky comment about him avoiding people or some such. He says something like, "no, Peggy's grandfather was Ty Cobb." Turns out he was looking at all of the Cobb memorabilia that Peggy, the party hostess, had in that room. The grandfather clock that the Tigers gave him when he retired, his signed contract from maybe 1920 or so, team pictures, gloves, bats, etc. Quite the collection. Ty Cobb trivia question: what number did he wear?
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
It just goes to show you that one man's Pulitzer Prize material is another man's crappy writing.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
Shows how useless the Pulitzer Prize can be as a judge for quality.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
I was only speaking figuratively. Did that piece actually win a Pulitzer?
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
Cobb retired before numbers came into MLB.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
I'm unclear which of the two pieces is being trashed here!
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
Oh, I see. Hell if I know.
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsI was talking about the Williams piece. I got through about half of it, got worn out and quit.
And why post about the Williams piece now? It was written back in 1986.
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsBecause Cramer (a Pulitzer winner for international reporting) just died.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
Maybe the OP sees Ted's demeanor as equating --it doesn't --to the "charater issues" of the players who didn't make the Hall this week ?
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsThat is correct. Figured it wouldn't take long for a correct answer.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
Not at all - my post was merely an observation of what was being posted elsewhere. Truth be told I have no opinion one way or another, but did want to read other's on the coincidence of the William's referral and HOF voting. summary - there' much less here than meets the eye .... other than an interest in opinions. My opinion about Ted Williams and any vote for the HOF is mutually exclusive.
Re: HOF and Ted WilliamsWell, if you judge guys by their off-field exploits, Joe DiMaggio is one of the leading candidates for "Douche of the Century" as well. I've read a number of biographies about the dude, and he was indifferent at best to the rest of the human race, and flat-out evil when he wanted to be.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams"was indifferent at best"
---------------------------- His bro Dominic was the complete opposite, so it didn't necessarily run in the family.
Re: HOF and Ted Williams
And in the context of voting for HOF, who gives a shit?!
