HJ/JT combo

HJ/JT comboThe most recent T&FN mentions Matt Evans from Western Carolina who has recorded 2.16 and 66.80 in these two events this year. I remember Rory Kotinek in the '70's whose marks I believe were comparable. Does anybody know any others who compete in this uncommon double?
How do the best decathletes' marks compare? Last edited by noone on Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:17 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: HJ/PV combo2.16, ok, but 66.80? 219-2?
Re: HJ/PV combo
Why the smiley face? There can't be many 7 foot high jumpers who can throw 219 feet, I wouldn't think..
Re: HJ/PV comboI'll wager there is no one who can throw a vaulting pole 219 '.
Re: HJ/JT comboBetter/comparable HJ/JT combos from some decathletes:
Christian Schenk: 2.27, 67.14 Jagan Hames: 2.30, 64.67 Attila Zsivoczky: 2.22, 66.79 Tom Pappas: 2.21, 66.56 Dan O'Brien: 2.20, 66.90 Lionel Suarez: 2.17, 77.47 Roman Sebrle: 2.15, 71.18 Mike Smith: 2.14, 71.22 Nicklas Wiberg: 2.13, 75.02 And try this combo on: Peter Blank: 2.23 (in 1983 at 20), 88.70 (in 2001 at 39!!) That's far from an exhaustive list. Just what I gleaned from looking at best decath HJ performances, best JT performances and associated bios on http://www.decathlon2000.ee/ Last edited by AS on Mon Jun 21, 2010 9:24 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: HJ/PV comboHey, guys, I am not in Mensa but the heading distinctly says HJ/PV.
Re: HJ/JT comboAnd the result referred to is actually a HJ/JT combo (which I'd also noticed in eTrack of last week or so). I don't think anyone but "noone" can change the subject title.
Re: HJ/PV combo
That's how I read it too and that's why I''ll bring up Henry Wadsworth of Florida, a world class PVer from the early 60''. He beat Don Bragg on several occasions. Wadsworth was also a fine HJer. Can't remember his HJ PB but it was substantial.
Re: HJ/JT comboWow! Comprehension surely isn't this much of a lost art. Apart from the erroneous PV in the title, there is nothing else in the initial post to indicate Pole Vault is part of this discussion.
The Rory Kotinek mention eludes to his 7-4 HJ/253-8 JT efforts while at UCLA I presume (taken from here: http://www.uclabruins.com/photos/school ... -top10.pdf). That's 2.23 and 77.31 on my calculations (Old Jav). He ended up with all-time PR of 2.29. Last edited by AS on Tue Jun 22, 2010 3:57 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: HJ/PV comboIf it is HJ/PV, then back in my era Rick Sloan was one of the best at HJ – 2.14 (7-0½);
PV – 5.08 (16-8)
Re: HJ/PV comboGabriela Mihalcea HJed 1.96 in 1987, and later went on to become a top class vaulter. She won bronze at the 1996 European Indoor Champs, and finished 4th at the Europeans in 1998. Her ultimate PB was 4.25 from 1999.
Re: HJ/PV combo
Uhhhh??? That was enough for me. No harm done.
Re: HJ/PV combo
is my face red: I fixed the heading.
Re: HJ/JT comboOn the women's side, off the top of my head, and using heptathlon scoring tables..
Spotakova 1.78/72.28 =2248 Braun 1.94/51.59 = 2049 Chernova 1.87/54.49 = 2014 JJK 1.93/50.08 = 2007 Schwarzkopf 1.83/55.25 =1978 We could add in Tessa Sanderson with 1.63 and 73.58, but it's the old JT I can imagine a few women that can throw in the 60's could beat 1.63.
Re: HJ/JT comboA few more notables...
Antonietta Di Martino - 2.03m/46.64m = 2073 Hellebaut - 2.05m/44.37m = 2056 Kluft - 1.95m/50.96m = 2050 Margaret Simpson - 1.85m/56.36m = 2025 Bergqvist - 2.08m/36.46m = 1918
Re: HJ/JT comboBill Miller, Javelin silver medallist in 1952. Threw 81.29 (266-8) in 1953 but that result was not ratified as a WR.
He was also a decent HJer with a best of 6-3 1/2. (that height was good enough for 8th place in the '52 Olympics).
Re: HJ/JT combo
So putting that all together and adding in some more, it makes for an interesting list. That's a massive gap between Spotakova and Di Martino though, I wonder if there are any 60m+ throwers out there with decent HJ PB's? Karin Forkel was athletic and I know Petra Felke had some greating training bests at 30m & standing jumps, but not sure whether eitehr competed in a HJ. Spotakova 1.78/72.28 =2248 Antonietta Di Martino - 2.03m/46.64m = 2073 Barber - 1.93/53.10 = 2065 Hellebaut - 2.05m/44.37m = 2056 Kluft - 1.95m/50.96m = 2050 Braun 1.94/51.59 = 2049 Turchinskaya - 1.89/54.82 = 2030 Margaret Simpson - 1.85m/56.36m = 2025 Blokhina - 1.91/52.16 = 2021 Shouaa - 1.87/54.82 = 2021 Chernova 1.87/54.49 = 2014 JJK 1.93/50.08 = 2007 Schwarzkopf 1.83/55.25 =1978 Bergqvist - 2.08m/36.46m = 1918
Re: HJ/JT comboI don't think I've seen mention in this thread of the late Bob Roggy, who jumped 2.03 at Southern Illinois and threw the old javelin 95.80
Re: HJ/JT comboMany years ago the AAU rules book included a Triathlon: 100-meter dash, High Jump, and Javelin -- combining run, jump, throw. It was included during the late 1950s in all-comers competition at Shoreline High School stadium, north of Seattle, and I recall seeing Don Jacobs compete.
Long ago Mr. Jacobs was listed in Track & Field News as a contributor and his results also appeared regularly in Long Distance Log. He is now age 91.
Re: HJ/JT comboI knew there was another former heptathlete who made the switch to JT (apart from Spotakova) but couldn't remember who. Justine Robbeson - bests of 1.78m and 63.49m - goes straight in at no.3. Also updated Blokhina's HJ PB and Turchinskaya's JT PB (both were incorrect before) which propel them up the rankings into the top four.
Barbora Spotakova - 1.78m/72.28m = 2248 Larisa Turchinskaya - 1.89m/59.28m = 2134 Justine Robbeson - 1.78m/63.49m = 2078 Tatyana Blokhina - 1.95m/52.16m = 2073 Antonietta Di Martino - 2.03m/46.64m = 2073 Eunice Barber - 1.93m/53.10m = 2065 Tia Hellebaut - 2.05m/44.37m = 2056 Caroline Kluft - 1.95m/50.96m = 2050 Sabine Braun - 1.94m/51.59m = 2049 Margaret Simpson - 1.85m/56.36m = 2025 Ghada Shouaa - 1.87m/54.82m = 2021 Tatyana Chernova - 1.87m/54.49m = 2014 Jackie Joyner-Kersee - 1.93m/50.08m = 2007 Lilli Schwarzkopf - 1.83m/55.25m = 1978 Kajsa Bergqvist - 2.08m/36.46m = 1918
Re: HJ/JT comboBest balanced results or closest to the elite in both events: Turchinskaya 1.89 and 59.28.
Re: HJ/JT comboIs that JT from Turchinskaya not from an older model though? (saying that her otehr PB is from the old model too, so probably should include her in the lists at all)

Old jav 66.96 New jav 66.80 High Jump 1.80 Old score 2169 New score 2166

Re: HJ/JT comboMissing an obvious one on the female side, although it goes back over 80 years - national champion in both events for a major nation, Olympic champion in one event.
Ethel Catherwood - 1928 Olympic high jump champion Canadian champ in HJ in 1928/30/31, JT in 1927/28/30/31 - JT PR only 36.17 but it was a different era.
Re: HJ/JT comboThe other really obvious one missing on the females is Babe Didrikson - gold medal in the javelin, silver in the high jump in 1932.
Re: HJ/JT comboAleksandra Chudina must be the third obvious one

Re: HJ/JT comboHey, Geoff Nelson is the straddle-high jump historian (with an unpublished book on the topic) who sometimes has computer issues logging onto this site. Couple days ago he sent me this list for this thread which I am pasting below:

Re: HJ/PV combo
Donovan Kilmartin did something like 7'2" and 17'4" in high school if memory serves. Not sure what his javelin best was.
Re: HJ/JT combo
Roggy also had a good triple jump.
