Love Elementary, CBS' new modern take on Sherlock Holmes. Borrows heavily from the Monk template, but I love it. Glad it's doing well(#1 new show).

Looking forward to Justified returning next week, though I'll miss Quarles. I'm not convinced they killed him off(I suspect they left his fate ambiguous for a reason), but if he's alive I wouldn't expect to see him again until the final season, whenever that is.

American Horror Story's sophomore outing better than last year. They are making the anthology format - using the same cast as last year - work marvelously.

So my top 5

1. Justified
2. American Horror Story - Asylum
3. Elementary
4. Breaking Bad
5. Grimm

Possibly my favourite year of TV ever.

Have been trying to remember everything good that was on all week.

Will finish off my list and post it asap.

in preparation for tonite's season 3 debut of Downton Abbey, my local PBS station is running a non-stop orgy of season 2, starting mid-morning.

I always appreciate threads like this one because I get new info/ideas -- e.g., never even heard of Luther, which cooter brown mentioned above.

Agree w Flumpy re favourite year of TV. There really does seem to be an abundance of quality stuff out there -- more than I can keep up with. Most lists already posted include most of my favs, and also include several that I know are great, but that I hardly have time to keep up with. For instance, this morning I was kind of distressed to realize that Justified and Suits -- just to mention two of the many -- are starting new seasons. I'm not ready -- too busy! No way I will be able to keep up, and even being able to DVR everything won't help.

Here are a couple more I really enjoy that haven't been mentioned:
Wallander
In Plain Sight (which ended in 2012 -- weird as it sounds, I was relieved -- I thought it was a good series, and they wrapped it up well; that's one of the hazards of TV series, I guess.)

To add a slightly digressive point -- over the past several years, I feel like a lot of great writing has migrated from movies to TV. I know that movies are more variable, year to year -- 2012 being a great case in point -- a great year for movies. But, imo, for seriously engaging viewing (you know, that isn't track and field :) ), TV has many more high level options.

My 13 don't-miss series (series meaning I don't include regulars like 60 Minutes):

Game of Thrones
Downton Abbey
Breaking Bad
Justified
Sons Of Anarchy
Dexter
Weeds
Last Resort
Person Of Interest
Boardwalk Empire
Once Upon A Time
Revenge
Ringer

(I suspect Homeland and Southland would both be on the list if I'd ever seen either; sometimes you need to triage and mark promising series down as worth watching in archival fashion a year or two later) (like Lost, for which I waited 5 years!)

In the amusing-fluff category, I usually watch Covert Affairs and Nikita with regularity, plus The Firm.

The Beauteous Babs has HGTV going on in the background from time to time whilst puttering about the house and a lot of their fare is amazingly enticing. I love it when Holmes On Homes rants on moron contractors whose messes he has to clean up.

The Name Game not exactly the first song that you'd expect on American Horror Story - Asylum lol. Nevertheless, a terrific scene.

I suspect Jessica Lange will be in line for another AHS Emmy.

Moriarty - or more specifically, his henchman - makes his Elementary debut in last night's terrific episode. A good show just made the turn toward great.
