Fernando MamedeI was researching the career of Fernando Mamede. I remembered him my high school years (1982-86). I remember him setting the world record in the 10,000 meters and his lack of success in the big international meets which was usually blamed on Mamede being "mentally weak", especially compared to Carlos Lopes. I didn't know that he competed in three Olympics ('72, '76, '84). In the '72 Olympics he competed in the 800/1500 and ran a leg in the 4x400 relay. In the '76 Olympics he competed in 800/1500. That's quite some range there! I doubt there has been many runners who have competed in the 4x400 and the 10,000 meters at the Olympics. Does anyone know his PR's in the 400/800/1500?
Re: Fernando MamedeMamede PRs: 48.2, 1:47.45, 3:37.98
Mamo Wolde ran the 4x400 in '56, and won the marathon in '68.
Re: Fernando Mamede
Thanks dj! And Wolde! Wow.
Re: Fernando Mamede
Don't know his 400 PR, but I saw him finish a 5k with what looked to me at the time like a very fast lap, in Dublin, c. 1978. Admittedly it was a typical Mamede flourish, at the end of a 13:30+ race against domestic competition that probably didn't extend him too much.
