TFN dual meet rankings

Postby Mighty Favog » Mon Dec 19, 2011 5:42 pm

When did TFN first compile its end-of-the-season college dual-meet rankings? I know the practice died out sometime in my 23-year subscription run, maybe 10-12 years ago.

there's nothing in the Archives, unfortunately, to allow me to give you any definitive answer, but I'm guessing the first mention is in On Your Marks in '68 or '69. With full-blown detailing coming on line in '70 or '71.

My freshman year in college was 1972 and I am pretty certain there was a detailed ranking by then.

From UCLA's media guide:

"Since the original rankings were initiated in 1970 by Track & Field News correspondent John Wenos..."

i have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind (we are talking 40+ years here!) that those may have been the first that got splash, but that John had actually done a couple of earlier ones. Maybe we mentioned them retroactively?

All-time dual meet rankings compiled

save '87 and '89 because I'm missing the relevant issues in my TFN collection, a problem that will be fixed shortly.

I'm working on retroactively compiling rankings for 1996-2011 (a long-haul project currently on the back burner).
