Thank you for posting the link. I missed my breakfast for this. It was an excellent race with Kebede in 2:04's. Ritz did 2:07.50!

NBC did not put the clock on the screen so most of time I have no idea what the times were. Guys goes to finish line and the announcer gives the time but no time is shown for him and they did not show time for any top male finishers.

2:07:50 for Ritz, who was going hard, picking up the pace until after 35, where he faded a bit, losing his chance at a 2:06; still faster than his coach's 2:08:15 (slightly short) NYC PR.

Top 3 are Ethiopian; so more Kenyan monopoly.

41 at the start, mid-40s at the end.

Still a three-woman race

Excellent result for her! Here's a comment from the RW interview from 3 weeks ago:

"I hope to be, at the end, under 2:28."

So, that result must feel pretty good.

(side note -- in the pic of her in the RW interview, she looks more like a multi eventer...)

Say what? That is a silly statement. It just a marathon and not a super fast one, for the women, at that. Samuelson is a fine athlete and nice roll model but, she is not Joan of Arc.

BTW I had no idea Mariya Konovalova once had cancer. I always wondered why she had no results after being a really good track runner in the mid/late 90s (under her maiden name of Pantyukhova) until she returned in 2006-07.

Well, yes compared to Carol Lewis, Saint Joan is Eric Sevareid. But I still think it is time to move on. Though on the female side, no obvious candidates come to mind. Maybe they could just have a robot on the motorcycle...or a female manikin with a speaker and Hutchings could just talk through it.

I'm surprised by all of the "!!!'s" by folks in discussing Ritz's time. I know the financial reasons for continuing to run the marathon, but even after today's performance leap, it seems clear that his sweet spot more likely falls between 5000 and half-marathon than in the longer event.

Ritz in the Tribune today that he didn't want to try to go from 2:09 down to 2:04 in one hop. Which makes sense. I suppose next time he can go with the leaders and see what happens.

But I agree with your premise. It is a tough world out on the marathon scene.

And if we're being picky, it wasn't really Kitwara's debut as he ran in Rotterdam but dropped out just before the 27km mark with a calf injury.
