Klingon StyleUnless you've been under a rock IN a cave, you know that Gangnam Style is the cultural meme du jour. (The Hitler videos used to be.) I've seen lotsa funny parodies (odd, since the original is a parody of rap and dance), but this one makes me giggle the most.

Re: Klingon StyleI've never heard of Gangnam Style. After watching about a minute of that video, I think I'll go back to my cave and get comfortable under that rock.
Re: Klingon StyleQapla' !!!!!
Re: Klingon Style
I dare you to watch the original and not laugh!
Re: Klingon StyleThe original what? I know you said this was a parody of something, but I've no idea what it's a parody of. Maybe if I did see the original, I'd appreciate the parody. But I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for it.
Re: Klingon Style
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0 In just over 2 months, Youtube has had over 300 MILLION hits on this. (that said, there's a J-Lo video with over 600 million that I just recently saw and was under-whelmed by - and we won't even mention the Bieber video with 800 million, that I've never seen more than 10 seconds of.)
Re: Klingon Style
You lose. I didn't laugh, or even smile. It's nice and quiet under my rock--I think I'll stay there.
Re: Klingon StyleI should add that another thing that hasn't made it to my cave is the word "meme". Now having read the Wiki article on the subject, I still have no idea what it means. This vocabulary deficiency is not going to bother me one whit.
(Needless to say, I also had to look up qapla'.)
Re: Klingon StyleI join tandfman in being perplexed by these videos. I had never heard of either idiom and don't know which was which but wasted eight minutes watching both and found nothing amusing or entertaining in either.
I looked up meme and understand the concept but flunked qalpa. Back to my cave.
Re: Klingon StyleWe certainly wasted some time, lonewolf, but we've undoubtedly accomplished something--we've made Marlow feel young!
Re: Klingon Style
Well, not even sure of that. I'm surrounded by teenagers all day, so it's not like I can avoid knowing these things, but REALLY??!! Not even a guffaw at Gangnam Style? You two need to remember what SILLY feels like!
Re: Klingon StyleThe Ducks, gangnam style, with some familiar faces

Re: Klingon Style
Yea, they do look familiar....especially the older gal in the first part who is dancing around...
Re: Klingon Style
Do you guys have room in the cave for one more?
Re: Klingon Style
But now that I have shown you that you are merely looking at shadows in The Cave (
Re: Klingon StyleI must admit: I'd never heard of Gangnam style before this thread, but thanks to Marlow I was able to successfully incorporate a reference to it in today's class (replacing an older mention of the Macarena...). So, my coolness factor has been restored, if only temporarily.
Re: Klingon Style
Ah, my work here is done . . .
Re: Klingon StyleI came out from under my rock in my cave. Returning to same.
Re: Klingon StyleWhaaa??? The Macarena is out ????
Re: Klingon Style
For a couple years now, unfortunately.... By the way, I can't help but notice -- in the spirit of the current "You didn't build that" meme -- that "Gangnam Style" samples heavily from Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam" (c 1988). Brings me back.
Re: Klingon Style
The cave is the one over there with Justin Bieber standing guard at the entrance. The rock is the one J-Lo is sitting on. That's why many people would rather stay under/in the rock/cave.
Re: Klingon Style
J-Lo? Who's she, the virgin hurdler?
Re: Klingon StyleMarlow, thanks for the pointer, I'm now under the rock and happier.
Re: Klingon StyleAin't we got fun?
Re: Klingon Style
You just want to be closer to J-Lo!
Re: Klingon Style
The virgin hurdler?
Re: Klingon Style
One of 72 awaiting you in heaven.
Re: Klingon StyleHere's a version without dancing. Surprisingly effective.

Re: Klingon StyleMarlow, this one's for you. I know you don't teach science, but surely you could create a lesson on Hamlet (or Heart of Darkness) in this style.
http://fox8.com/2012/10/06/local-teache ... le-lesson/ Go for it!
Re: Klingon Style
I love it! The parodies are coming fast and thick now. Like this one: 300 Style! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abLBbLPH ... re=related
Re: Klingon StyleOK, I'm officially out from under the rock. I was listening to Q, the canadian show on NPR, and they played the whole of Gangnam Style.
Re: Klingon StyleOk, I'm trying. m From limited observation "gangnam"seems be bouncing/stomping from foot to foot while gyrating (or not) one's arms to a heavy beat, with or without lyrics.
I can't tell, is it always performed to the same "music"? What is the meaning/derivation of the term "gangnam"?
Re: Klingon Style
Gangnam is the rich suburb of Seoul, and the song is making fun of the hip culture there. There is only this one song to 'gangnam style' - it's Korean pop-rap. Compare it to this, which it was patterned after: (skip to the 1:37 part and thereafter) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ6zr6kCPj8
