You KNOW It's Big When....

A place for the discussion of all things not closely related to the sport and its competitive side. (Locked down several times a year during the major championships)

And today is the birthday of Roger Hargreaves, an author of children's books. I must confess that I'd never heard of him.

I'm afraid that image had too many pixels for the Message Board system to handle. You''ll have to open the URL outside of this box.

Made me read the wiki article. I didn't realize his famous unsolved 'theorem' was scribbled in the margin of a book!

The final frontier (September 7th, 2012):

It's also a good test of your knowledge of the series (e.g. how to defeat the Gorn).

* Also, gotta love the 'Red Shirt' sweating bullets on the transporter pad.

I got to have fun in London when they interviewed Patrick Stewart (oh, sorry, SIR Patrick!) on the infield in the break between the 100 and long jump the first day of the decathlon. He showed quite the knowledge of the sport (he was a hurdler in his youth) and of course has one of the world's great voices/deliveries.

After they were done they threw it back up to me, and I couldn't resist. I said, "Getting back to the action, over on the backstretch it's tiem for the decathlon men's long jump [insert long pause for effect, then my best imitation of...] Make it so, Numbah 1!"

He then came up to the booth and chatted awhile. Absoltuely delightful man. Was off to Israel the next day for a new film.

Interesting and typical Hollywood greed over the rights to the memorable Star Trek theme song. This link describes the spat between Roddenberry and Composer Alexander Courage.

Today Google celebrates its 14th birthday. You can see the birthday cake on the site's home-search-page, but . . . this is the wrong day (by their own admission - they say they like to celebrate their birthday whenever they want some cake). As Wiki says:

Wiki wrote:The domain name for Google was registered on September 15, 1997, and the company was incorporated on September 4, 1998.

I can't even imagine my life without Google (or its ilk). I look up at least a dozen things a day!

When your company name turns into a verb you know you're doing pretty well.

I remember meeting with my Ph.D. advisor one day, probably early 2000 or 2001. He was commenting about the new search engine that was becoming all the rage, devised by a couple of Computer Science guys out of Stanford. We admired their ingenuity, but also chuckled at the name (a "google" is 10^100), and furthermore wondered the consequences of entering a world dominated by Yahoo!, Netsearch, and all those other engines-du-jour......

Oh well, with that weather forecast I guess I am wrong and the USA obviously has no chance of winning the Rio sevens gold.
