Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?It's still a bit early to speculate, but does Usain have a chance this year, or how about Allison ?
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Usain's historical double triple at the Olympics should do it for him.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?with Gabby Douglas in the picture? (for a starter)
You have to keep in mind that the SI choice has nothing to do with the best athletic performance(s) of the year.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Roger Federer.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?You really think they're going to put a non American on the cover of SI? Yes I believe Gretzky was on there a while back but most people in America think of Canada as a kind of North Montana where the residents are a bit quaint and speak funny but they don't really see it as a different country.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Jackie Stewart was Sportsman of the year. They'll probably cop out and give it to the Fab Five en masse.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
I wouldn't count on it. It's been thirty years since anyone not from the U.S.A. has won outright (Wayne Gretzky in 1982), and twenty-eight years since a track athlete has won (Edwin Moses shared with Mary Lou Retton in 1984). Michael Johnson lost to an amateur golfer in 1996.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?I predict LeBron. NBA+OG gold, best player of the Games.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Is LeBron a figure who seeks to better the world? I don't know if you can say that.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Just since 2000. Curt Schilling, Randy Johnson, David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Boston Red Sox, Tom Brady, Dwayne Wade, Brett Favre, Derek Jeter. You were saying
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Don't you think Americans have that same patriarchal attitude towards Jamaica?
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
While I admit to us having an avuncular attitude towards Canada (Uncle Sam's favorite nephew), Jamaica (and the Caribbean) really does seem like a foreign country to most Americans (I think).
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Well Felix has no chance for AOY or Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. How about her chances for 2012 Sportswoman Of The Year? Maybe she can get lucky like SRR did when she won AOD over VCB.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?If Bolt didn't win it in 2008 or 2009, he's not going to win it this year.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?It'll be LeBron in a slam dunk. NBA title, Olympic gold, MVP, changed his image. Nobody in track and field had such an impact on the general sports fan. Besides, unless that athlete was amazing in a marquee event (100 meters, namely) they don't stand a chance.
It'll be LeBron, followed by Gabby, then Eli Manning (Super Bowl champ) and somewhere down the list, Bolt.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Because of the nationality thing, Eaton might have a better shot than Bolt.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Eaton would not have a better shot than Bolt. More people in the U.S. know Bolt than Eaton, and the magazine business is all about sales. Back in 2006 Dwyane Wade won the award over Federer, who won three of the four Grand Slams that year and was runner-up in the one he didn't win.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Coincidence? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Yes, I do think it is a coincidence that Time Inc. published a series of editorials calling for American renewal in early 1981, then awarded the Sportsman of the Year to a Canadian, Wayne Gretzky, in late 1982.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
I count 25 years.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?Eight "Athletes Who Care" shared the award in 1987, including Judi Brown King and Kip Keino. I discounted them because they won for community service, not athletic achievement.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
I did not know sanya won AOD over VCB .I would have thought they would have given that to VCB
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson did it together David Robinson is the definition of a figure seeking to better the world Tom Brady is beautiful Brett Favre is the media's love affair Dwyane Wade started a charity when he was 21 the Red Sox won for the first time in 86 years Derek Jeter is a Yankee
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Jeter was only second among Yankees and about sixth overall in the voting for Baseball Player of the Year (or maybe just AL POY), how he could then be AOY of all sports is beyond me -- at that point it became meaningless and pointless.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?This is just athlete of the year for American readers of SI. And so the choices are pretty much limited to athletes competing in the USA and usually for the USA. on a world level the AOY is probably a soccer player.in India it will be a cricketer.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?You mean S.I's American Sportsperson of the year. They are far too babyish to see the choice as a world sportsperson choice. After all their readers in the States probably believe that not being an American sportsperson is a bit of a mistake of nature.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
You mean it's not??
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
Athletic accomplishments (within the calendar year) went out the window a while ago as far as this award's concerned.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?kind of a BS award given that it favors baseball, NFL, NBA and golf over any olympic sports, pro soccer and tennis. very likely james will get it this year with someone like eli manning in second. the fab 5 will be the only olympic athletes to be considered.
Re: Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ?
I hate to brag, but...
