Weir ran great in the 200 heats today; don't know how good his chances are to get a spot in the relay final, though.

Weir has the 200m races just as Bolt and Blake do. He is probably going to run a PB and that takes a lot of effort (yes, stating the obvious). On the flip side, an alternate has opened up that won't be tired from running multiple rounds and will be available for relay practice.

I'm thinking Carter to Michael to Andrew Riley to Bailey-Cole for the semi-final. All four of them can practice over the next few days. Riley and Bailey-Cole can switch legs as necessary.

Carter to Michael to Bolt to Blake for the final.

The relay team is set in stone already, and after the 100m
Kimmons-Gatlin-Gay-Baliey

Patton might run the 3rd leg in the prelim though.

I don't think Gay will want to run 3 with his dodgy hip. Don't know how much experience Bailey has on curves ... maybe Bailey on 2 and Gatlin on 3 would be better. Spearmon might be another possibility on 3. Gay should anchor.

You must have missed the meet in Monaco.
This team will run, and to rest Gay, Patton will most likely run 3rd in the prelims.

Maybe, but he would be more effective in the overall scheme of things on the third leg.

Agreed. I think that's about a few tenths of time off, just from not using his left hand.

I was interested in creating a quick list of all Team USA 4x100 results since the first "drop" or exchange problem that resulted in a DNF or DQ which, in my memory, was in 1988. And I came up with this:

88 OG - dnf exch
91 WC - gold
92 OG - gold
93 WC - gold
95 WC - dnf exch
96 OG - silver
97 WC - dnf exch
99 WC - gold
00 OG - gold
01 WC - dnf exch
03 WC - gold
04 OG - silver
05 WC - dnf exch
07 WC - gold
08 OG - dnf exch
09 WC - dnf exch
11 WC - dnf exch

I'm actually doing lists for all four men's and women's 4x1 and 4x4 relays and the "dnf exch" notation covers all situations except the retroactive drug DQs. Does this seem accurate for all WC and OG results since 1988? By my count, eight total times in global championships that we failed to get the baton around, resulting in no medals or placings. For anyone that might be a relays expert, I'd appreciate confirmation that this is correct. Thanks.

American Track and Field has a website with an article on the US 4x1 relay history.
I'll see if I can find it for you. You list looks accurate.

So who is runing the prelim for the US men and the Jamaicans?

With Powell out, Weir may get the call. If I were Jamaica, I would go Frater-Weir-Bolt-Blake.
Run them in the prelim (90% effort) and again in the final.

The US final will likely be Kimmons-Gatlin-Gay-Bailey.
Patton for Gay in the prelim, LOOKOUT!
Demps, Spearmon? or someone for Gatlin.

There is really no question about anyone needing rest, but that's doesn't matter for
the US and their Must-Use-Two-Sub stratgy (Shh! It a secret!)

with the data set smaller, you'd write dnf as flukes, as each time out you are talking about different individuals. but not with a data set this large. you have to include the dnf as a real danger.

with 8 dq and 9 finishes in the past 24 years, it amounts to a coin toss as to whether or not usa drop's the baton.

provided usa finishes, with gay fresh (but probably sore), bailey (sore?) fresh, and gatlin (he's solid right?) fresh, you are talking about three 9.8x guys and a 10.0

against a tired blake, bolt, plus a 9.9 guy and a 10.0 guy.

that makes it a pretty much a dead heat.

still you have to take the GOAT jamaica by a quarter of a meter.

over all odds are 75:20:5 jamaica : usa : rest
the calc for usa is 50% (on adjusted times) - 25% (about 50% chance to finish) - 5% for GOAT Bolt and wanabe GOAT Blake.
independent odds are here... http://www.oddschecker.com/olympics/ath ... lay/winner

Start list for Jamaica sees: Carter - Frater -Blake- Bailey-Cole for the Semis. The assumption is that Bolt comes in for Bailey- Cole for the final.

It was more exaggeration to emphasize how bad Bolts left hand is. I honestly thing him receiving in his left and switching takes off a possible few hundredths of a second.

I haven't seen any race Bolt has run in his life where he couldn't find another few hundredths if he wanted to.

Anchoring him opens up the opportunity for him to find tenths that he never looked for before.

we ran 37.9

It looked like Talbot couldn't catch Gemili and then Gemili put is hand in a really strange place, as he has a bad shoulder and then panicked and moved it

I'm really excited by him though

He's very mature and he'll do well in the future :D

Gemili's inexperience probably got the best of him. He took off way too early. To his credit, though, he ran a blazing anchor leg.
