That shows a fundamental misunderstanding of bio-mechanics. If they had started their 'kick' (you do understand that they are ALL running that last 100 slower than any other part of the race, yes?) sooner, they would have expended their energy reserves even sooner and had no ability to run the last 50 as quickly as they did. Sanya decelerated a little more than the others, because she executed a race plan that would get her a lead AND leave something left. O and DD could have stayed with SRR for 300, but then decelerated even more and SRR would have still won by the same amount.
While it's true that some (rookie) runners mismanage their energy reserves, SRR, DD and O all executed equally well (which is no surprise since they're all Championship veterans). 1-2-3 finished the way they 'should' have.
If there's any criticism to hand out, it's that the Russian ran too hard, too soon.
Great job SRR...I was nervous throughout and glad you brought the gold home. As for all this talk about 'she almost lost' 'her tactic was bad' 'she ran a slower time than expected' 'if big O had a lil more room she would have caught SRR' ...hell if I got all the numbers right Saturday night in the lottery I wouldn't be in the office today i didnt and i'm here and she has gold
TBOs self-confidence is quite amazing! After the race, she was interviewed by the BBC and she was really suprised that she hadn't retained her title. In realilty she must have thought that around 49 flat would be needed to win, and surely in her wildest dreams she couldn't have hoped to run that fast. Having said that, as a Brit, I think she's marvelous!
Just saw the final race on youtube's Olympic page - i think SRR ran a very controlled race. I even saw her raising her hand (thumping in the air) on the finish line. Can't complain about the time...a win is a win and getting the first US track gold medal makes it even better
She also says she's still learning the event! If so, maybe she really could have run a low 49
She says she just doesn't seem to be able to run fast outside of champs, but it would be great to see her inside Sanya in Zurich, with SRR going for a really fast time and TBO trying to respond
Congrats to SRR and especially (another great comback) Trotter.
But, the slowish time is a bit of a mystery to me. I mean Valarie Briscoe-Hooks ran sub 49.0 28 years ago. And SRR seems to have all the tools (geat speed, strength) to run in the 48's...

Don't be so patronising you know exactly what i mean
Sanya has been world class since 2003. The chances of her being a finalist in 2016 are slim at best - she's already had a better innings than most 400m runners (see Wariner)
She has even less chance given she's American and will need to be in great shape just to make the team

Agreed. Top 400m runners dont tend to last much longer than about 7 years at their best. Rio will be one Olympics too far for SRR and most of these women

I personally think that SRR was more concerned about winning the Gold medal, especially after what happened in 2008...

If you look at Sanya's history, she struggles when she doesn't have a rest day before the final.
