Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsShawnacy Barber - never heard of him before today, but bright future!
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsIt's a new high school record. He's from Texas.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
He may go to school in Texas, but he competes for Canada (4th in their Oly Trials). Plus, has he not already graduated? (Collegians are not eligible for College Records after graduation - or are the rules* different for HS?) * T&FN's rules are the only ones that count.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
The collegiate record-setting window closes at the NCAA. High schoolers who graduated in June can still set HSR's until August 31st, unless they've already begun competing for their college or have turned pro. And that goes for class records (frosh, soph, junior) too. I.e, a soph can still get the soph class record in the summer before his junior year begins. I think the U.S. High School Federation (or whatever it's called!!) rules are different than T&FN. Check with "gh".
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsT&FN recognizes HS records until August 31st and they don't care that he started competing for Canada. This topic came up when Nico Weiler was an exchange student in California, they said they would recognize it if he set a record. Shawn is a US citizen and has lived in and attended school in the US his whole life, it's not even an issue.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
If he's competing for Canada, yeah, it kinda IS an issue!
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsHigh school records are nondenominational, so to speak, and have always been. They're not American records. They're high school records for high schools that are geographically located in America. Barber is as American as you can get with just enough tenuous connection to Canada to get the benefits of avoiding USATF.
It's a shame the Texas UIL won't recognize it though since they only recognize marks at the Texas State Meet for state records.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
Then you would have really hated it if Nico had broken the record
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
Explain? Barber tried to make the US Junior team in Bloomington and failed. Why should the UIL recognize a performance for someone who is no longer in high school?
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
Oh no, you misunderstand. I'm happy with the HSR (and BTW, I had a wonderful afternoon with Nico in May); I just want Shawn competing for the USA!!
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOslooks like the metric measure was 5.57, which makes it 18-3 1/4, not 1/2 (which doesn't exist on the conversion tables)
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
I will ask his dad if the bar was measured in metric or imperial. It looks like the rest of the meet was conducted in imperial. As far as the UIL, each state decides what they want to recognize. Here in WA we follow T&FN guidelines
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
The Florida HS Assn ony tracks the State Meet record, but the FL Milesplit site knows better!
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsI confirmed with Shawn's dad that the bar was measured at 18'3.5" not 5.57m
If you have any further questions I can get you his email address.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsI thought Shawn had dual citizenship. He competed in Canada's Trials, too, and our Junior meet (though I don't think he competed in USATF Jrs with intent of making the team; he doubled that and NBNO that weekend).
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
Yes, he has dual.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOsHe's just 4 cm from the Senior Canadian record
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
But he's now internationally a Canadian... if the USATF Juniors run by same rules as the Seniors, then Barber is no longer eligible for that meet, at least not when international selection is on the line.
Re: Canuck 18yo vaults 18-3.5 at AAU JOs
He competed at USA Juniors before he did any Canadian meets. He won't be able to compete at USA Juniors or Seniors next year.
