Odds are very high that SOMEone will drop (or at least disastrously bobble) the stick, leaving the other team to jet home to a comfortable win.

The key is that if both teams pass with the same (non)precision, Jamaica wins. The odds of that are slim indeed. The Jammis do have a slight cushion, but anything more than a slight wobble and the Amis win. A wobble by the Amis? Put jam (pun!) on them, cuz they're toast.

I disagree. I think will all things being equal that Jamaica is 3 - 4 tenths better than Team USA. It's going to take more than a slight wobble for the US to win.

Just did a quick calculation.
If you were to create ONE team, made up of just Americans and Jamaicans, then by two measurements, only ONE American runner would make the "A" team!!

By 2012 bests:

Blake
Bolt
Gatlin (only US)
Powell

By overall PR's:

Bolt
Gay (only US)
Powell
Blake

All Americans and Jamaicans make the 100 final; could be a great relay

How much advantage do the Americans gain (or disadvantage to they make-up), if any, because neither Gatlin, Gay, nor Bailey are running the 200 (whereas Bolt and Blake are)?

Should be a little bit of an advantage with the additional recovery time. Would also enable them to run the same team in prelims and final, but realistically not gonna happen.

Just in case there were any questions whether R. Bailey belongs in that relay, those questions should be answered by now.

Powell seems to have been injured in the 100m final. That changes everything, I think.

usa performance in 100 does improve 4 x 1 chances, along with possible injury to powell.

Not sure, don't think Frater or Carter are that much slower than Powell

Yeah, but Gay, Bailey, and Gatlin are faster than both, so it evens out.

No it doesn't. Jamaica won and set a WR last year without Asafa last year in Daegu.. We can do it again. Both Bolt and Blake and much faster this year than last year.

Carter - Frater - Blake - Bolt

That's it.... That's a World Record....

We can also have....

Carter - Blake - Wier - Bolt

Either way.... World Record and JAM GOLD....

Based on 2012 season bests:

Nesta Carter - 9.95
Michael Frater - 9.94
Yohan Blake - 9.75
Usain Bolt - 9.63
Total = 39.27

Darvis Patton - 9.95 (or Trell Kimmons - 10.02)
Justin Gatlin - 9.79
Tyson Gay - 9.80
Ryan Bailey - 9.88
Total = 39.42 (39.49 w/Kimmons)

That's pretty close and comes down to hand-offs. Will the 3 x 200m races have any effect on Blake and Bolt? If the batons get around the track without any major mistakes it'll be a race for the ages.

Lol. Relays don't work by adding up numbers like that. lol.

Its simple, unless Jamaica has a dropped baton, we will not lose the mens 4 x 100m.

Why? Because you said so? The 2004 Athens final is proof that great teams on paper can beat by teams with vastly inferior footspeed WITHOUT dropping the baton.

Yeah, actually they do, when both teams are equally (in)efficient at getting the baton around. The .2 second cushion that Jam has can disappear in one bad hand-off. All things being equal, Jam wins comfortably, but all things are NEVER equal in the Oly 4x1 final!

Is that like in 2004 where USA were sure to win? :P I do expect Jamaica to win though.

Anybody know the US relay pool? Things look better after todays 100m final, with a 3,4,5 vs 1,2, DFL

The relay team is set in stone already, and after the 100m
Kimmons-Gatlin-Gay-Baliey

Patton might run the 3rd leg in the prelim though.

I don't like Bailey on Anchor. Would rather have them put Gay on anchor. Seems as if Powell won't be on the JA relay as he pulled up in the 100 meter final. The U.S. team can be competitive if they get good exchanges all around.

Heck Naw... No disprespect to Patton as a person, but we have had too many mishaps on the 4x100 with the baton in his hands... It should be Kimmons, Gatlin, Gay, then Bailey.... In that order. Hopefully, we can get a 5 meter lead and hold off Bolt...

Anyone with an idea of the possible makeup of the Jamaican team??? I'm thinking Carter to Frater to Blake to Bolt (or maybe Bailey-Cole on 2nd)

This is my bet. Carter- Frater- Weir- Bailey-Cole for round 1. For the final: Carter- Frater - Blake- Bolt.

Phew!I get a funny feel that Jamaica are gonna drop the stick. They are on a fantastic role three years in a row, you just get the gut feeling that something is gonna give. Realy hope it does'nt though.
