Is this the first time in an Olympics where nine (9) lanes will be used? Heat 3 and 4 are showing 9 athletes. It also looks like they are either missing a heat or they're only advancing 21 athletes instead of 24 (27?).

Remember 100 is the NON-qualified preliminary round. Notice no medal favorites at all.

I'm too old and grumpy to remember or even know about a Non Qualified prelim round. Is this the motley crew?

Be kind. This is how the tiny nations get to be part of the Games. The WC no place. Here? Absolutely.. And this from the planets greatest elitist snob.

It says that it is 3 plus 6, so with 6 heats that makes 24 for 3 semis.

In the women's 400, FOUR women from the USA are listed.
The "fourth" (after SRR, Trotter, and McCorory), is Marlena Wesh, with a 51.23 PR!!
Huh??

I looked her up in my FAST Annual, and she's listed as being from Haiti.
So her listing as "USA" was supposed to say Haiti?? :?

Yes - national affiliation listed incorrectly. She has dual citizenship & is representing Haiti.

this is the first time in the Games; concept made its debut in Daegu last year as part of the cutting from 4 rounds to 3.

inclusion is one thing, but the woman with the 15.00 second time comes from a country with 30 million people just on numbers there has to be some girls/woman A LOT faster than 1500, and then the women from west african countries with 12-13 seconds personal best come from countries where the ancestors of the overwhelming majority of great sprinters come from and these countries are probably undiscovered gold mines for sprinting.

yes include more countries, but get their programs going before they put them in the olympics.

Don't know if I fully agree about the inclusion argument, but here's some ammo for your conclusion:

In the recently concluded National Junior Olympics, the three youngest girl's age groups (ages 8 and under, 9-10, and 11-12) 100's went like this:

8 & under: 14.82 (Q), 14.75 (winner)
9-10: 13.52 (Q), 13.27 (winner)
11-12: 12.43 (Q), 12.58 (winner)

Fire away!! :)

Preliminary rounds... same as in Daegu (this time I'm boycotting those races) allow those athletes who advance to 1st round (with 12 sec probably) to run two races while many good sprinters will end in 1st round. Sad...

Great news about 9 lanes for 200m. Probably no one will be in lane 1. That was good in Osaka 2007.

Why are there no seeded athletes in this heat? Is that to ensure that some of them get to run in the 2nd round too?

This is the Pre-preliminaries, a run-in to the first round, as it were.

Some of us obviously disagree. The argument to uphold the status quo on the other hand...

It says that it is 3 plus 6, so with 6 heats that makes 24 for 3 semis.

When I posted they were not finished with the heats that's why I asked if a heat was missing. I also wondered if they would use 9 lanes, but it appears that they will still use 8 for the semis and finals.

I'm "certain" they will never use the 9th lane (in this case lane 1) for anything other than an unbreakable tie in the previous round.

The only thing I care about Day 1 is the womens 100m 1st round heats and the IAAF website still doesn't have this information up yet.

They cannot set those heats up until they see who qualified in the run-in round, obviously.
Too bad you don't enjoy the rest of the events.
