Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCWhen Uganda is shown, Idi Amin will be mentioned. Every damn time.
When the Dominican Republic is shown, it will be pointed out that they produce a lot of baseball players. Others?

Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCWhen an all-time great like Alekna carries his country's flag he will be totally ignored. How many throws and medalists in the discus final will be shown in NBCs telecast?

It could have been worse. http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2012/07/ ... ml?_r=1&hp
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCTo say nothing of Tuvalu: Price paid for Internet Domain ($24 Billion, if I heard it right.)
And Hockey medals for Canada... And I wondered whether Bob Costas winked to his BoothMates when the newly-adopted SportsCamp approach by Germany was called "positive". That had to be either intentional or purely Freudian, as it's still called. Commentators seem to complain that the speedy pace was affecting their "scripts" (Teleprompter?) BTW, I always enjoy S. American and Mexican TV where News Anchors typically sit with their Laptops right in front of them.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
My wife when they showed him..."who's the old guy?"
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
I suspect that Costas and his boothmates have so little knowledge of what's going on in Olympic sports, they would not have winked at all. They are just script readers. Costas is a baseball guy with a big ego.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
They said the same about Venezuela.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCNorway - They're better at the winter Olympics
Brazil - favourites for the football tournament USA - And there is [Insert famous basketball players name here]. Lesotho - Surrounded by South Africa Netherlands - Well known for speed skating (wtf?)
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
It's the same here in the States: Florida - Gators and hanging chads California - trail mix: what isn't fruits and flakes, is nuts Texas - big hats and Big Oil Utah - Mormons and more Mormons Massachusetts - Kennedys and Bosox
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCThis is question for GH ; US broadcast journalists are trained in protocol as a mandatory measure, right?
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
Unless that's a rhetorical question There are no laws. There is no government licensing of journalists. There is not even any board certification, like there would be for doctors, accountants and lawyers. A plumber usually needs a license; a journalist does not. That said, many major universities give degrees in journalism, the coursework for which usually includes a class or two in ethics, as well as legal concepts like defamation, copyright infringement, and so on. In the U.S., it's a fine line between free speech and defamation, and where that line is drawn depends on which judge happens to be presiding. It used to be that print journalists, although unregulated in the U.S., competed in a capitalist economy for people to purchase their newspaper or magazine. Although short-term crap could sell some papers, for the most part that same kind of thing lost long-term credibility if repeated. So the news industry was self-policed in order ensure some long-term credibility. Very little in the way of English-style tabloid reporting here in the U.S.. the public just never went for it. That has broken down in recent years with the internet, which doesn't rely on sales at all... and the advent of on-line media has caused traditional print media to lose business, resulting in a lot of mergers. Cities like London or Los Angeles that used to have multiple morning and afternoon newspapers competing against each other, are now down to one. With the loss of competition comes the loss of incentive to self-police. Cut-throat pressure to get a story first also has resulted in the cutting of corners. Even with all that, I don't *ever* see it coming under government regulation, because of this little provision in the U.S. Constitution called the First Amendment.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
That is seriously one of the funniest things I've read on this board in a long time!!
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
I stopped reading right here. The thing is that humanity and courtesy really are not enshrined in laws so I figure its legal to be as rude and as unbecoming as you want...I have gotten my answer. I now better understand the TMZ on Rupp discussion..thanks.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
And besides being an all-time great, Alekna even has the back story of being the Lithuanian president's body guard. Surely that's more interesting to the American public than Lithuania almost beating the US in basketball once upon a time. Oh well.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
1. Nor should they be. 2. It's called free speech, and yes it's protected by our Constitution, and (oddly enough) it should be. People should be able to act like asses. How else can they expose themselves for what they really are, so we all clearly see it and know not to give them any credibility?
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
uuuuuhhhm....I speak on a soapbox addressing the World stage my good sir...as it relates to the Olympics that the perspective that really matters...Five rings and not an arc, I would figure all would subscribe to that regardless of nationality.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
Are you saying that Free Speech (as it exists in the USA) should NOT be a global right?
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
My interpretation is 'shit stirrers not welcome'.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
Indeed. Not welcome. But their right to be such - defended!
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OCGuaranteed???
That, despite the 10 ZILLION hours of broadcast time, NBC will NOT show the entire 10K's, marathons, or 5K's!!! (Unless an American is FAVORED to medal, but even then (Rupp in the 10K), they'll NOT show every lap!!!) Heck, they may even break away from the steeples for a LJ by an "athlete" from Tahiti!!!!
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
Sure, as long as they don't mind being thrown out of the building.
Re: Guaranteed from any American broadcast of OC
Evicted, expelled, exiled, banished . . . it's all good!
