Yeah, and at Stanford a few years ago, the "Sandboni" on one of the pits malfunctioned in mid-event.. had to revert to raking both pits.. :(

MG always makes his own enviroment as we've just seen. As you just said, he always rises to the occasion. I don't expect London to be any different.

I don't know about that. He was gonna redshirt this year, but couldn't stand it and came out for the team. I betcha he plays whether he medals or not.

And if he medals, that pretty much shows that playing football last fall didn't hurt his preparation.

Prediction: Goodwin will play football this fall regardless of what happens in London.
He may be Oly Champion but he is not going to jump 29 feet or threated the WR.
He will attempt to burnish his football credentials and opt for a multi-million football contract vs. a few (hundred) thousand track signing bonus and a perilous track career.

He's 5-9, 177 pounds and plays Wide Receiver, so he'll need to add 15-20 pounds if he's to play in the NFL (he would be the same size as Panthers WR Steve Smith if he gained 20 pounds). He'd also need to have outrageous numbers on the football field to get millions in the NFL. If he's a projected 1st or 2nd round pick next year, then he's gone to football. However, if he's a late round (5th-7th round) pick or undrafted free agent without a guarantee of a roster spot, we might be seeing him in Moscow next year for the World Championships.

It's like Jeff Demps. He knew he had very little shot of making an NFL roster, so he chose track and field. We'll see what happens with Goodwin.

Goodwin is noticeably "bigger" up close than Demps...he may not get a million signing bonus but it be will more than his track signing bonus and "salary" and he can play in the NFL.

Is it just my imagination, or is there anyone else here who smells a repeat of the 2000 U.S. team's performance (or lack thereof)?

Demps got considerably smaller since January....he was like 195....BTW, I still feel like Demps could be a factor in the NFL...if he wants to runb track, then go to find some other coach...in 4 years in Florida did not improve at all.

Fewer concussions in track and limited other damage if he can avoid javelins...

Maybe so, but he's less likely to be penniless, suffering from depression and battling significant health issues at 40 if he was to stick to track and field. The money may be too good to pass up though, depending on his draft status.
