Not even the best short hurdles field of the meet? See that Gold medalist down in 9 and other medalist and would have been medalists all over this chart.

in an historic sense, perhaps, but the women's field is a bit heavy with "what have you done lately" people methinks.

Looking at the season's bests for the men...most are slower than the last year or two. Hope they (especially Trammel and Oliver) can get back up to close to PR's.

I am with gh, if you look at both fields (as of today) they have seven of the top 12 on the yearly world list. The men line up as 2,4,5,6,10,11,12 and the women 3,4,7,8,9,11,12, so I give the nod to the mens field.

Lolo making that womens team when she is only #9 on the US list tells me the womens field was just as deep.

Even if he doesn't make the team, Jeff Porter is going to be in London anyways. He'll be watching his wife try to dethrone Sally Pearson, which is extremely unlikely.

First heat very impressive times for a few esp. considering a -1.6. Merritt with a 13.13 then Richardson in heat 2 with the same time and a +0.3. Would have loved seeing the races but oh well?! Impressed by college soph. Lovett advancing and pr-ing after a long collegiate (in/out) year 13.49. Faulk and Oliver could be really battling it out for that third spot, assuming no one else jumps up in the semis and Richardson and Merritt stay clean over the hurdles.

Oliver ran a clean race (for once?) and looked well in control. Hard to tell with the varying winds, but I gotta think it's
Oliver
Merritt
Richardson

BTW, Richardson's lead arm was not so pronouncedly overhead today. Has he been working on bringing it down a tad? OTOH, Merritt's arm looked higher.

Merritt looked best in prelims, Richardson second best. Completely missed what happened with Trammell. He seemed to look good after the first hurdles, and a few hurdles later he was way back.

Nothing quite like the 110h: Kind of like watching mini-potential-almost-Ashton-Eaton-like talent!

I agree. It's one of maybe 3 or so events (shot and triple jump too) where the overall athleticism of the participants is, on average, above the rest-to take nothing away from the athletes in other events.

TT was taped up and definitely didn't seem 100%.

Saw him at Ga. Tech in May and heard he had some sort of lingering injury issue, most likely hamstring is what I was told though I am not sure on that.

David Payne did not just brush, but knocked over, every single hurdle and ran 13.32. He could be in there for 3rd in the final, assuming he makes it.

Did Jeff Porter used to run at club events in the Boston area around 1999-2000? I think I remember him dominating 60m hurdles indoors when I went to some meets at Harvard back when I was on the GBTC. He might have been in high school?

maybe. debatable. probably a toss up between the men's 110 hurdles and women's 200.

the 110s are brutal in the USA. what, we have about 25 athletes with the A standard?

making the team in this event excruciatingly difficult. with the "big three", I think folks sometimes forget about the depth of talent hovering just marginally in the shadows (e.g., Payne, R. Wilson, R. Ashe, Porter, D. Faulk, and so on).

if conditions are reasonable, look for something very fast.

Merritt-13.01, WOW! Surprised Ash did not make a better showing but apparently had some sort of foot injury very early season that probably played a part in his mark but he was running better in April/May.

Slight headlwind for DO's heat then a decent tail wind for Merritt's. Sets up for a big final now to see what happens in the third semi.

12.98 (+1.5) Extra wow!? Don't know what to say to that, really, but this is going to be an impressive final-just as expected by most.

Could be though I don't think this Porter is that old unless you might have your years crossed up? He attended Michigan (husband of hurdler Tiffany-formerly Ofili).

I believe he went to high school in NJ and would have graduated HS around 2002/2003 I would guess
but if he was dominant as a high school freshman or soph then maybe he's who you are thinking about.

12.93 for Merritt. Excellent. He should be in the hunt for gold. I knew Oliver would be left in the blocks again.

Even though Oliver was left in the blocks, is second half of the race was not where it usually is. He pulled up even with Porter half way through, but then just faded back. Very disappointing, but This is definitely an Olympic finals worthy team.

Wow, that was spectacular. It was a tough race for the big man Oliver . I take my hat off to him, he has given us many thrills and he was always as much of a gentleman and good for the sport during interviews as he was great on the track. Makes me wonder if this event is such that the big men have no advantages.

Yes, Oliver has been a good guy-I do feel for him.

I am happy for Porter since he's never been to a major comp. and just had a huge meet with massive pr improvements.
