That race was hot! top 3 under 4.06 and Shela Reid went 4.07.

I would love to see Martinez get the A and make the team. She has been working hard and doing pretty well all season.

Her 4:05.42 time can be found via <http://www.sdusatf.org/tandf.html> which describes the competition as an "All Comers" meet -- that might not meet the Olympic Qualifying standards criteria:

" Performances must be achieved during competitions organized or authorized by the IAAF, its Area Associations or its National Member Federations. ... Performances must be achieved during official competitions organized in conformity with IAAF Rules."

Maybe that's why "2012 Top USA Outdoor Track & Field Marks - Women last updated - 6/21/2012" <http://www.usatf.org statistics/topMarks/2012/Outdoor-Women.aspx> shows 4:06.11.2 for Anna Pierce on 18 May 2012 in High Performance Meet at Occidental College.

However, Pierce (Olympic Trials steeplechase record holder at 9:27.59) is a strong finisher, evident in TV of her European races. Note also her personal bests -- 1:58.80 for 800m in France and 3:59.38 for 1500m in Switzerland.

Rounds like this do not do much for me. Thirty on the start list, 28 start, 24 advance. Pretty darn useless.

What a total waste of time. What are they thinking?! If you are only going to eliminate 3 or 4 people, why bother!

Right. For the millionth time, that's precisely what us "shorten the Trials so that every race actually means something" types have been saying for years.

Not counting DNS's, it looks like they eliminated four women. Lots of 60-63 last laps.

I guess someone has to say...it's good practice for the OT where there will be 2 qualifying rounds, as usual.

Agreed. They seem to get it right in the other events this year, why not in this one?

Uceny just won the first semifinal in 4:08.90, Simpson 2nd. I don't think three people are going to beat Uceny, so I see her as an Olympian, but the other two could come from five or six others. Simpson hasn't looked that great so far this year, I could see her not making it. Pierce seems to be coming on, Rowbury is a big-meet performer, and don't count Schmidt out after her 800. Wow! Great depth! :D

Spoke to soon... Schmidt eliminated in 2nd semi. :( Guess 800 took too much out of her.

Ironic that Shanay Briscoe made final of high jump, while Hasay did not in 1500. Would be even more so if Briscoe, who unlike Hasay was not excused to compete in her 08 Trials final due to junior worlds travel rule, makes team...

Poor tactics. In 08 she ran her own race and was able to pick off tiring runners, this year she overexerted herself by running with the leaders.

Agreed. This seems to be the best way to simulate the competive conditions of the OG even if only a few are eliminated. At least as far as the number rounds they will encounter it will be the same as far as I know.

Uceny stayed out of trouble at a slow, but not ridiculous, pace. She looked in control with 61.5. Nobody in semi II tried to make the pace such that the time q's would come from there, so Schmidt missed out in 6th place.

Uceny, Simpson and Rowbury look like the best bets to me.

I'm not there, so couldn't see how Simpson looked, but she hasn't been very impressive this year. I think Pierce might get in.

I recall Schmidt having to pull up about 300m out (might have been even closer to the finish) and thinking that she has trouble shifting gears and it would hurt her. I wasn't thinking of a foul at that point but I'd imagine that's where the protest came from.

Uceny has looked very easy in the two rounds so far. Not sure what's up w Hasay, but methinks she may have a better future in the 5000 than the 1500

Didn't look at this as an event issue. It looked like an out of gas issue no matter what the event.

If true, the merits of that kind of thinking are debatable to say the least. In the Steeple, 5K and 10K it's idiotic not to cancel preliminaries if there are enough scratches to enable that.

In the sprints, duplicating the rounds regardless might make sense. Maybe.

But the 1500? I don't know---the downside (unnecessarily fatiguing the athletes) might outweigh the positives (get use to it, because that's what you're going to experience in London).

The National Championship / Olympic Trials is not supposed to be a training event. Leave that to the coaches.
