Claye's was wind-aided. Kitchens pushes him- within an eyelash of 27 feet- and practically no wind. Such is luck.

You're right - good for George. Unless things get crazy here, he's just about got his plane ticket punched.

Goodwin goes 8.23 with no wind to take the lead

Can Taylor get in the mix with an A standard?

That's what we want to see here! Come on Taylor, hit 8.25 and really mix this up.

Thanks to Michael Hartfield, American long jumping won't have to see a 6.81 ( 22-4) move into the final three rounds.

Standings after 3 rounds look a little classier than us naysayers had feared:

Marquise Goodwin 8.23m w: +1.3 27-0
William Claye 8.23m w: +2.3 27-0
George Kitchens Jr 8.21m w: +0.6 26-11 ¼
Christian Taylor 8.11m w: +1.2 26-7 ¼

(and Taylor just improved another cm)

Taylor is up- last chance to make the team in this event (short of an injury to somebody).

Taylor equals his 8.12... but not good enough. He's still the favorite in the Triple Jump.

Hee hee- Claye doesn't improve, but his 8.22 moves him up to 1st place by virtue of the countback! Now to see if Goodwin can counter.

Wow! Claye had Goodwin by 1 cm on the second best jump... so Goodwin responds with 8.33.
Dang! First OT LJ I have missed since 1984.. :(

I just saw the prolific 2:45 field event rundown by Dwight on wDT, mSP and mLJ. He mentioned Goodwin "struggled thoughout the competition" in the lj. Not having watched it but in keeping track of the comp. through usatf, it did not look he strugged much having lead much/most of the competition. What's he talking about regarding "struggled" or is he just saying something?

His 1st attempt was good enough to get him the 3 additional attempts, he had 3 attempts over the A standard, and he was in the top 2 pretty much for the entire competition. So no idea what NBC meant by struggling.

If Goodwin medals in London, I don't think he'll be playing football for the University of Texas in the fall.

Goodwin is a competitor. He rises to the occasion. He inspires. No telling what he can do in the right environment.

Thank you. Even just watching the results update on usatf, I wondered how MG could have been struggling. Maybe the real struggle is Dwight's with his producers telling him he has to summarize three field events in under 3' and he gets flustered.

It was truly a great competition to watch live. Right before the competion started, the wind picked up quite a bit. It was pretty much a cross wind from the west, but even with the grandstands there, it seemed to affect the early competition because the first round was a foul fest. After the guys adjusted, it was very entertaining to watch. Kitchens hitting the "A" was clutch. His emotional reaction after Taylor didn't pass him in the 6th round said it all. Then Claye pulling into first on his last jump only to be passing by Goddwin's bomb reallly made this one of my favorite events so far. This was a really unexpected treat after watching the dreadful qualifying in the pouring rain.

This actually happened at the Big 12 Ch a few years ago. the second jumper's coach was watching and after the measurement was announced, he said "Sumthin wrong, my guy can't jump that far." He was right, the laser was 30 cm off but this early in the competition we had not acquired "mental pit landmarks" which enable you to "guess" the distance within a few cms.

Not to mention at the NCAA Indoors a few years ago when the laser died in the middle of a competition. No amount of huffing, puffing, swearing, tearing, King's horses & men could get it working again. Had go back to the "Stone Age" and break out the tape so all the jumps could get measured & the competition continue.
