Almost ultimate performance? Should he have run sub 4 in the 15?

Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
The difference being that Beamon, MJ, and Bolt all obliterated the WR's whereas Eaton must barely topped it, which is only to say that this highlights how underrated Sebrle's WR and greatness was. All praises for Eaton's awesomeness today, but as a fan of Sebrle I just wish he'd have recieved more credit while the record was still his.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
I agree, but did Sebrle compete in these gawdawful conditions?
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
No, but his record was set in a small'ish multi-event meet without a home-track, home-crowd, spend-the-rest-night-in-your-own-bed advantage. Again, not meaning to take anything away from Eaton, just trying to highlight how good Sebrle's record was.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
I'll take the better conditions, but you do have a good point. Best line from the announcer (Dr. Z?). "This should cancel the Czech"
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
From USATF site (underline mine): "USATF must turn nominations over to the USOC on July 2 thus athletes must have met the Olympic standard by the end of their individual event at the Trials. There will be NO CHASING OF STANDARDS. " Edit: It's in Section 2, a, under the heading "Track & Field" on page 8 of this USOC document that spells out USATF's selection procedure for the 2012 Olympics: http://www.usatf.org/events/2012/Olympi ... nature.pdf Last edited by Al in NYC on Sat Jun 23, 2012 10:31 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
Still have that as #1. MJ elevated the WR to another level, and he did so at the Olympics and after winning the 400. Ashton is close, though; outstanding performance today.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
I'm well aware of the stated policy, but this is USATF we're talking about. It's not like they've never made exceptions before. It also still doesn't answer the question regarding the benefit of leaving an Olympic Team spot empty.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!It sure would be nice to be able to watch or relive the world record somewhere for those outside the US and without needing to search for hours. It's 2012, you know...

NBC's content is territory restricted Of course there are ways to circumvent that, but I have got no interest in doing it.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!In my story on Clay's conflicted feelings (about whether to quit after the hurdles), he said his coaches were investigating whether he could try another dec:

NBC is only allowed to show Olympic competition video on the internet to users in the United States and U.S. Territories.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0iNamrYAVA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6tzis a "small" meet in a very small town in sebrle's back yard. no doubt eaton gains point from the hayward majic. in the OG good weather will provide as many points as the hayward majic does.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!I have been out of the loop so I just read thru the thread
FANFUCKINGTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now do it again whenI'll get to see it Ashton. WR in London mi seh!!!
Re: 2012OT mDec—how about a 4:16.23?
My participation will be on a lower level next weekend . . . but in London, the heptathlon may be even more exciting than the decathlon. I'll be here.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
If anybody found videos (like it does exists for Sebrle's 9026) - please let us know
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!The dude is easily the best athlete on Earth right now. What blows me away is that he has the longest Long Jump in Eugene so far this Trials. I can't fathom that kind of overall athleticism.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
If you're going to do all scoring tables, it should be Yang's actual mark of 9121 in 1963, not his converted one of 9206, which makes it a bit easier for Eaton.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!Great thread by the way, guys. Fun reading it although I have terrible access to internet up here in New Hampshire this week
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!The decathlon got a mention on the front page of the NY Times sports section, as well as a long article on the inside. The mention is "Champion Falters: Bryan Clay, the defending gold medalist in the decathlon, failed to qualify for London" Then the article talks about how the decathlon is unpredictable, and the expected US sweep in London fell apart just as the big Dan or Dave campaign of 1992 fell apart. Then around paragraph 25, it casually mentions that Eaton won in a new world record. The article was obviously written after the discus, and the writer was too lazy to change it. And judging from the article, the only event yesterday was the decathlon. No gushing about Lolo making a comeback to get on the team, which should make some people here a little happier.
I knew that the NY Times has a pretty sucky sports section, but this really reconfirmed that belief. Oh, they did put Eaton's WR marks in the agate, but spelled his first name "Ahston." I'm guessing the the Times had some big company picnic yesterday and the people in charge were drunk late in the day. Here's a link for those interested. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/24/sport ... ref=sports
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
Forgive me for my ignorance but what do you mean by "all scoring tables"?
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!The scoring tables were changed after C.K. Yang's WR of 9121 in the early 60s, making his mark something around 8000. I believe the 9121 is the highest number of points scored under any table that has been used. I don't know what his "converted mark" of 9206 means. His record under the current tables would still be around 8000.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!No disrespect - but I think the all scoring record conversation is dumb. Who cares about some old
Scoring system. I do think we should recognize Sebrle for an amazing world record!
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!My guesstimate on Eaton's last lap is 62 seconds. Any official lap times for him. Last 300?
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!For comparison purposes, we should use the same scoring table IMO. Using different scoring tables seems as ridiculous to me as measuring one long jumper using meters and the other one using yards.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
Sorry, I thought that only applied to the Olympics themselves, not to a national trials meet that is obviously not shown, and has no rights sold, in other countries. Anyway, I believe the only deca event that NBC covered "live" was the 1,500. And the video that they posted at the link above is just the 1,500 and has the middle lap cut out, I guess in order not to strain our poor little attention spans.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!US TV has always shown us more of the Decathlon 1500 coverage than all of the preceding Decathlon events combined. Always has/always will. Track gets 70% of the attention Field 5% and the rest is on Hooman interest.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!Nothing like home cooking and the feel of a familiar bed and toilet.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
I think the posting about the "all tables" record was meant to be whimsical. There is whimsy in track and field.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
And plenty of parkas and raincoats to keep warm and dry in...
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!I have already watched the deca 1500 five times including the live version online. That is a WR for any deca 1500 ! how fitting that the local hero would get a huge pr in the last event in the only middle distance event of the deca in the Mecca of the sport. Anyone still baffled at clay and his coaches. How can they be so mid informed ? If we, just mere fans, are aware of the qualifying rules, how can be professional coaches not be ?
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!
62 flat according to this morning's Reg-Guard.
Re: ¶2012OT mDec—Ashton Eaton 9039 WR!!!!!A link to the splits is on the results page.
Eaton 300: 49.95 700: 2:00.38 (70.43) 1100: 3:12.23 (71.86) 1500: 4:14.48 (62.26)
