It's interesting the Russian Federation nominated Savitskaya and Kurban straight away rather that wait. I understand Savitskaya with that great performance but I would have waited till later in the season and seen how Bolshova and Kurban's form progresses. The latter has had a big improvement this year so I would have probably put her in rather than Kurban.

Bogdanova ran just 14.30 and HJed 1.76 before retiring, lying in 9th place. I've only just found out she DNF in the pentathlon indoors too. She was up there with Bolshova after two events, running 8.26 over 60mh and 1.86 in the HJ, before a mediocre 13.98 SP and then she pulled out. Whatever injuryt it was obviously hindered her here.

Bolshova I guess will be nominated for the Europeans, but I doubt Bogdanova can find form before then, unless she is nominated based on last years form.

Sviridov is the only male nomination thus far so Drozdov, Pogorelov and Kukyanenko have an opportunity to qualify still.

COULD YOU show us the specific news for the no selecting Bolshova,a 6466p hep and 1.92m HJ cannot take part in oly, ,the season is early,making that decision is stupid.

TomRoy, I would have nominated Chernova & Savitskaya & waited till later in the season to see who is preparing better, Kurban or Bolshova. Bolshova has more uplift in the SP & JT whereas I dont see Kurban improving significantly.

Kharlamov & Skurenev have been selected for the Europeans in the decathlon & have the opportunity to qualify for London there. Logvinenko has been penciled in for the Euro's but is not a definite. They are leaving the door open for Drozdov & London until nearer the time & will check his training (he has the qualifer from 2011) Pogorelov said he is "99% certain" his career is over; he has persistent injuries.

Bolshova & fourth placer Panteleva are nominated for the Europeans. They thought Bolshova would qualify but went strictly with the first two who beat the qualifier.There is no mention of a 3rd nomination for the Europeans.

It seems Chernova is still playing the mind games with Ennis, in a recent interview:

Interviewer - your main rival, Ennis, has already set a PB at the beginning of the season, are you surprised?

Chernova - In general, I am surprised! Last year she did the same, she started well and improved quickly but in the end she failed. I dont know why she is beating her PBs now. She may be forcing her events too much and wants to show she is at a high level and ready to go. Well, this isnt important. The main thing is I know I can improve and tighten my disciplines to get extra points.

Yes, there's a strong argument to confirm Chernova and Savitskaya and keep a place open for whoever's in better form, Kurban or Bolshova, as we get closer to London.

I guess there's also the question of piece of mind for optimal preparation - by confirming an athlete (Kurban in this case) early, will that not allow her to better prepare for London without one eye over her shoulder for fear that someone will produce a top score at the last minute, when she's out of chances to better it?

For instance, the Germans seem to have taken such an approach in confirming Behrenbruch and Freimuth for London. Now, it's not impossible (though I grant that it's unlikely) that both Schrader and Knobel score higher in Ratingen than Freimuth did in Gotzis. I presume that the higher-scoring of the two will get the last spot.

This approach has allowed Freimuth to begin preparations to peak at London, rather than worry if his spot is in jeopardy, and thus whether he should compete (and attempt to peak for) next week.

I don't know enough to say which produces better medal chances. It's a nice luxury for a nation to have more potential medalists than places, rare in the multi-events.

Will any of the russian female middle distance runners be in Helsinki? With so much talent over 800m and 1500m they could easily send some to Helsinki but with the russian championships so shortly after the EC i wonder if they won't all concentrate on qualifiying for London (i am assuming the national championships will be the decisive competition to qualify for London).

I don't believe that happened.

Yep it did! It was the championships of the South and North Caucasus federal oblast (region). Other regions have had theirs too and the results are available on the fed's website.

I'm not sure they've got the results in the right order - I can't believe Chernikov and Sharygin would really be the two 78m throwers in the Qs, neither have been over 70 before according to Tilastopaja!

I did see results a couple of hours ago saying Iordan threw either the 78 or the 79, don't know who the other was (Tarabin did throw 72).

ETA: According to a morning report on rusathletics.com , Iordan was one of 5 over 72; the others, besides Tarabin, were Tovarnov, Korotkov and Sukhomlinov. Sharygin did qualify but Chernikov didn't. Makarov did.

Found this link on the AW thread about the W800 (saying Meadows has had some good news even if she isn't picked for London):

Klyuka, Yulamanova and Zinurova have been given 2-year bans for failing the 'biological passport' test (apparently showing signs of tampering) and their results annulled starting from mid-August 2009 in the first two cases and the 2011 Euro Indoors (where she beat Jenny into silver) in the last. (It also means Incerti is now the Euro 2010 marathon champ - 2 champions DQed in that event!)

In the B group, which is ongoing, we also have qualifications from Sokolova 6.81, Kolchanova 6.67 & Zaitseva 6.48.

The latter may not be outstanding but she has had two meets this year, one below 6m and one just over. With her her first jump in qualifying she goes 5.83...then in rd 2 goes 6.48 for auto qualification.
She won the champs last year with over 7m then failed to qualify for the final in Daegu.

The results have been corrected now, Iordan was in fact the longest qualifier with 79.88. Korotkov threw the 78.10 and the other auto Qs threw 72s.

Davydova has been pre-selected already along with Golovkina, Borzakovskiy and Shubenkov based on Euros performances (Arzhakova does have to qualify though, presumably because Savinova is also pre-selected as WC).

Other WCs Zaripova, Chicherova, Lysenko and Abakumova have also been pre-selected, as has Isinbayeva, and the 10000 champs have taken place already and women's winner Grechishnikova has been selected.

The multis and walk NCs have also taken place already and the teams have also been named along with those in the marathons:

Ankle injury, I think. She achieved 6.50m with her first jump (to qualify automatically) so it wasn't like she was straining for that mark. It's going to be tough to make the team (Nazarova and Kucherenko have gone 7m-plus this year) but I think we can assume she's in reasonable shape.

Galkina set the pace for Zaripova (at her request) to 1K in 3:05.84, then Zaripova took over and pulled away. She was running for a particular time, to test her strength. She will also run the "poltorashka" (one-and-a-half, or 1500) to test her speed, and race no more before London.

Galkina said that her goal was just to make the Olympic team, which she did. She did not try to stick with Zaripova, but rather concentrated on beating the other women. Her leg is still bothering her some. She said that if someone breaks her WR at the Olympics, she's OK with that. She wanted to be the first to break 9 minutes, and she did that.

I remember Galkina in 2007 in Osaka going out in 3:00 and fading away badly. I wonder how she will run in London. Zaripova is going to be very hard to beat. Then, of course, there are the Kenyans and Ethiopians.

Randy Treadway should love this event, because both Galkina and Zaripova like to "take the race by the horns" and "wrestle it to the ground". As for myself, I appreciate any winning tactic.

Should be a great race; can't wait!!!

Is this stuff on another thread? But in the 800 prelims, they qualified from several heats based on time.
Kostetskaya ran 1:57.46 with a negative split.
Svetlana Cherkasova won the 2nd heat, but didn't advance to the final with 2:01.32.

Mariya Savinova 1:57.42 - she will not contest the final, having been pre-selected. She said her fast time was planned, and she will contest the first round of the 400 tomorrow. "My coach thinks up such intersting assignments for me!" She is not looking for a spot on the 400 team, just a speed test, and will not compete again before London. She says she has time to complete a "significant body of work" before the Olympics.

She used an interesting word, "raspylyatsya". "There is no sense in squandering/dissipating one's energies. The literal meaning is to "be reduced to dust" (pyl'). >:-)

Tatyana Markelova also ran 1:58.55.

So, it's clear that one of the reasons we see so many fast times in Russian championships is that they qualify purely on time, not place. Doesn't swimming do this, too?
Personally, I prefer good seeding and place competition; it's called RACING!
