Off the Form Chart! Stealth picks for Olympic Team

Postby preston » Tue May 22, 2012 6:57 am

gh, and the TFN Wisdomness Council (2400 years of track and field knowledge) have come out with formcharts for the US Olympic Trials. http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/index. ... icles/1043
http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/index. ... icles/1042
Aside from taking all of the "can't miss" athletes, what do these guys really know? This thread will attempt to pick athletes who are NOT on the list but who end up actually making the Olympic Team. A tall, near impossible, order. I'll have to think about what we actually "win" if we can put more than one person on the team. I will start with the sprints, I may come back and do the jumps, throws and distances later (or someone else can if they're interested).

100 - Wallace Spearmon (top end; no acceleration, but...)
200 - Harry Adams (everyone had Dodson last year, right)
400 - Jordan Boase (within the margin. Can he run rounds?)
110H - David Payne (got off a plane and won a medal)
400H - Reggie Wyatt (HS record holder...)

100 - Octavious Freeman (A near gift?)
200 - Chalonda Goodman (good sleeper pick; get hot at the right time...)
400 - Ashley Spencer (began season as 400h)
100H - Briana Rollins (thought about Lewis...)
400H - Turquoise Thompson (they stole my stealth pick, McIntosh! Damn you, TFNWC! Damn you all to hell!)

I saw Spenser's runaway 400 at Big Tens (51.02 after a 51.99 MR in her heat); she has good 200 speed (won in 22.99) but is better in the 400 and could easily make the final, especially if she is still improving rapidly.

NCAAs will give us a sense of what she can do. Marlow, watch for her race in Jax.

Curious as to where and what times Jordan Boase has run recently...

He had [at least] one mark recently (45-high?) but I cannot remember where/when and it might have been a little slower (in JW's race?)

Probably too soon for Cato because his throws are still not up to snuff for the world stage. However, with 10.8, 2.11, 7.70, 48, 13.9 (7.88 indoors), and 5.30 as possible marks at the NCAA meet (hope springs eternal but all of those are in his current PR range), if his throws match his size and strength he could be better than several of the other good young US decathletes. However, he tweaked his ankle on his second LJ at Big Tens (after a 7.66 opener), although he did run the 110h and a leg in the 4x100 Heats and Final afterwards, but I think those efforts were affect by the LJ tweak.

OK, it went from impossible to near Freakin' Impossible. I may have to change the rules and say "top 3" because we know that some of these athletes won't technically make the team even if they finish top-3 because they may not get the A-standard. So, it's TOP-3! Now, onto the jumps

Men
HJ - James White (countbacks, misses...I need some luck)
PV- Michael Woepse (where's PVP when you need her?)
LJ - Trevell Quinley (TFNWC oversight? He was in Daegu!?!)
TJ - Zedric Thomas (You need a HUGE PB)

Women
HJ - Deirdre Muller (super longshot)
PV - Melissa Gergel (where's PVP when you need her?)
LJ - Akiba McKinney (A little luck?)
TJ - Shakeema Walker (another TFNWC gift?)

This is a good thread idea.
Looks like most of the players are accounted for on the charts. Here are a couple darkhorses.

Men 800m -- Brandon Johnson. I don't think he's cracked 1:46 yet, but he looked strong outkicking Wheating down the stretch at Oxy.

Men 1,500m -- David Torrance and Will Leer are fast finishers.
I didn't see Miles Batty on the list. He hasn't shown he can blast out of a pack with the big boys, but he has shown some wheels. How much any of the college runners will have left come the Trials is a big question.

Whew! Talk about going against the house! The game is rigged I tell ya, rigged! Anyway, here are the throws.

Men
HT - Chris Rohr (replacing Matt DiBruno)
JT - Nick Lyons
DT - John Bowman (Solid)
SP - Zach Lloyd (Do you know how hard it is to be a darkhorse to make the team in mSP?)

Women
HT - Brittany Smith
JT - Marissa Tschida
DT - Becky Breisch
SP - Ifeatu Okafor

I will have to get to the 800, 1500, steeple, 5K and 10K later, but in the meantime I will leave you with my w800 darkhorse pick...Laura Roesler. gh, blues, 26mi235...pick your jaws up off the floor!

One more thing: You can only pick one per event. So thanks for the participation, ExCoastRanger, but try to keep it to one "guess" only (so you have to choose, "Leer" or "Torrance" or Batty but not all 3).

Deca, Mike Morrison, any reason he's not on the top ten list? He's got the #4 score.

wDT, personal favorite: Suzy Powel-Roos. Talked to her the other day training at Modesto JC

About a year ago it was mentioned in T & F N I believe that Sam Chelanga was applying for US citizenship. If he is eligible I would expect him to be 3rd behind Rupp & Tegenkamp at 10K and to be a factor maybe in the 5K also. However since there has been no word, I guess he will not be in the mix.Maybe a last minute decision. :?

Morrison had his knee scoped a few weeks back, won't be competing. With Hardee-Eaton-Clay sitting up top, pointless for him to risk coming back to soon in a field where his chances of making the team are so slight; far better longterm planning to aim for Moscow next year.

Here's the Flotrack interview with Sam Chelanga after the Oxy race... The chances seem pretty slim that his citizenship change will come through in time. I'd never seen an interview with Sam before.. He seems like a pretty good guy.

sorry, but looks like you missed the concept as framed by the original poster: you're not supposed to be naming people who weren't in our top 3 (although that's a good game too): you gotta find people who weren't on the list at all. i.e., not in the top 10!

Thanks Blues for the Chelanga video. Unless there is a big pleasant surprise in government flexability I guess he will have to settle for 2016 Trials. :(

Here are a few long shots not in the top 10 who could sneak into 3rd in the right conditions :

100 Brock
200 Hardy
400 Gehret
5K G.Heath
10K Chelanga (I believe in miracles!)
HH Nugent
400H Stigler
BJ Cole
TJ Curry
JT Greer (Wishful thinking!)
Dec Moss (Is he injured?)

100 Freeman
200 Tarmoh
400 Spencer
HH Stowers
400H Tosta

I thought long and hard about Gehret but ultimately went with Boase (There is another who probably should have been picked over Boase and Gehret...it seems obvious that he would have been chosen by now. I won't comment until he does).

Gehret is the 5th fastest collegian in 2012 with a time of 45.22 to win the Big 10 Champs. But, what proves that he has the "wheels" to get a mid-44 (or better?) time is that he was 2nd at Big-10's in 20.62 (0.8) [20.78 w0.6 in heats]. His PB in 2011 was 20.93/46.69 (46.62i) so it shows that he's growing into his own. He turned 20 2 weeks ago.

For all of you guys making the Barrett Nugent pick: tough luck! In any other country he's an Olympian. He's one of those athletes in one of those events where you have to be podium ready to make the US Team (potentially top-3 could be sub-13). mSP and mDec might be two other events like that.

I mean that's the fun part of the topic right? All these athletes were left out of the top 10 picks for a reason!

I completely agree with you. (full disclosure: Nugent was one of my picks that I had to flip a coin on...because only one choice per event)
