Re: Who cares......Be nice if you'd come up with a proper name for this forum topic, other than just lamely 'Who cares......'. It would make reading the forums a lot easier.
Re: Who cares......
Thanks Mr Bean, i'm sure i'll consider you, your 5 posts and your avid forum consumption when deciding on my thread titles in future
Re: Who cares......Ha i told you 800m is going to be the event of the year
Pamela opens with 1.56, some new ethiopian in 1.57 and Janeth 1.58
Re: Who cares......
Actually I agree with the title. Apart from the gender issues, watching 1:55 doesn't interest me a great deal. Its like race walking. I can 'appreciate' it. But I won't spend a lot of time searching for it on the TV.
Re: Who cares......
Event of the year? Not even close. The men's 100m is still #1 and is shaping up to be historic - 5 men already under 9.90 in all conditions and the season is still very young. m200 is also going to be better than the w800. w800 wouldn't even be my favorite women's competition. w100, w100h, w400h are more competitive and far more interesting. w800 has merits but it's still only a 3 woman race, maybe 4; hardly event of the year.
Re: Who cares......agree.... w800 is so far down my list it's not even on the radar
Re: Who cares......Never wiser words said.....
Re: Who cares......
How very predictable, you must have thought long and hard before coming up with 2 mens sprints And a 3 women race !! without even stretching this lot all have medal potential Jelimo Semenya Savinova Jepkoski Sinclair Fantu (if she had more experience she would have won today) AN other RUS AN other USA Hachlaf Meadows (or AN other UK at home)
Re: Who cares......you obviously didn't think long and hard...but, you should have. You had to stretch to "another USA and RUS"? and then Meadows?
There are only 3, maybe 4 women who can win if they all show up healthy. No matter how many names you throw out (or countries because you know damn well they don't have a competitive name to add) the race will still be run at Jelimo's and Jepkosgei's pace - which means too fast for everyone else not born in Africa - except MAYBE Savinova.
Re: Who cares......
NIce try to spin this as me 'refuting' you but you may have noticed that this is my thread and it is you who has chosen to disagree with me i didn't say they could all win i said any of these could medal, i didn't name specific US or RUS because there are potentially loads of them and i have no idea who will qualify. Meadows was included at the end as she was WR 5 last year was Diamond League champ, has medalled at world level previously and has home advantage, which also goes for the other UK girls who are potential finalists. I seem to remember Savinova coping ok with the pace last year how the scenario you describe is less exciting than a race with 1 (maybe 2 at a stretch) potential winners is beyond me, thank god.

Re: Who cares......
I am incapable of separating the "gender isssue" from this event. It is a 500-lb gorilla suffocating the otherwise wonderful event.
Re: Who cares......I don't understand the need to promote another event at the expense of the men's 100m....
I find the w800 exciting to watch as well, when there's a good race on. But I don't sit down and say, "who cares about the men's 100m" while this race is on? I'm excited about the men's 100m, the women's 100m, the men's 200m, the women's 200m, the men's 400m, the women's 400m, the men's 800m, the women's 800m, the men's 100m hurdles, the women's 100m hurdles, and the women's 400m hurdles. Does that mean I say, "who cares about the men's 400m hurdles", just because I'm not into it? No, I think it's a great race too, even though I'm not as excited about it....
Re: Who cares......
...which is her fastest ever season's opener too.
Re: Who cares......What difference does the time really matter? 1:55, 1:57, 1:59. These are races and watching races is enjoyable. Watching competitors, strategies, etc., and the joy that winning brings to those who are successful.
Sure, a few races may be better and more exciting, but that is not to say that almost any race cannot be enjoyed.
Re: Who cares......
in this instance times are important because it means that these ladies are ready to race this year. If Jelimo had come back and won outside 2m it wouldn't indicate she was ready to take on Semenya or Savinova who we know can run 1.55. Pamela Jelimo showing she is some way to recapturing her old form and the way in which she won the race show us that this comeback is for real. The fact that a newcomer ran 1.57 and an old timer opened with her fastest ever all add the the excitement of this event in 2012
I'll stop promoting this event when the rest of the board stops acting like the mens sprints, Allyson Felix and Sanya Richards are the only show in town
Re: Who cares......Don't forget VCB although she's in another event far mor exciting than the Men's 100m.
Re: Who cares......
I think Mump boy that you missed the point at what I was saying. You don't have to be concerned with times to care about an event and enjoy watching it. Times are a bonus, if you really care about that. Yes, what happened was a good indication of what might be time wise for the event, but in the absence of that, even if times were slightly slower, the competition was good to watch. That was an outstanding meet all around. Great times and great competition. This bodes well for a great summer!
Re: Who cares......To assist those of us who regard track and field as 40 events, individually, I would love to see a a totally separate section and then we could ignore the endless stuff between the various sprint obsessives, and those posters whose concentration levels allows of vast enjoyment in 800m and above , or even the field events, would not need to bother about remarks about so called "promoting" other events.
Re: Who cares......
Sorry, i completely agree
Re: Who cares......But of they run 1.54 all the better, right?
Re: Who cares......LOL no matter how much you 2 rant and rave, the w800 holds no excitement. I noticed she dropped 1:56, great time. But where's the drama and intrigue? Whereas, Blake drops 9.8, Bolt drops 9.8, Asafa 9.8, Gatlin reenters the fray with a 9.8 and beats Asafa. Walter Dix 9.8w. And the 4x1 is looking a lot more competitive than in the past 3 years. Sorry guys. you are on a Quixote mission with this dead horse. And I didn't even throw in the 110s where the bar is so high in the US, the best races will be on the circuit not the Games.
Re: Who cares......
Because they will spend most of the summer dodging each other and it's not like Gatlin and the major champs version of Powell will challenge Bolt when he gets into peak form. And the fact Gatlin will probably make the US team leaves a very sour taste too.
Re: Who cares......
Smoke, you crack me up! I am just as excited as you about the 100 and sprint events as you! But you know what? I find enjoyment in a host of other events as well. You really ought to expand your horizons a little. There is so much more out there that can bring you joy in life. Stop limiting yourself. You remind me of a scene in the Count of Monte Cristo. Mercedes is reminding Fernand that when he was a child he was upset that Edmond found more joy in a whistle he had received for Christmas than Fernand was with a pony he received. You are Fernand. If you can't find enjoyment outside of your little world, that is your problem. We get all the enjoyment you get but have a whole lot more!
Re: Who cares......I have very little interest in random people running 9.80 it seams just about anyone can do it these days why not mention
Nesta Carter Mike Rodgers Richard Thompson Michael Frater Ngonidzashe Makusha because we all know that these ludicrous times count for nothing. In deagu 10.09 was good enough for a medal and it wasn't from any of the above. The 800 has drama, personalities, controversy and a plethora of potential medalists and for those of us who can contemplate being excited by an event that isn't dominated by US/JAM men it is going to be one of the highlights of this year.

Re: Who cares......Here's why Mump is right .. .. .. .. ..
We've got the 4 most recent global champions going into a champs at or near their peak in an event where pacing and tactics add a level of excitement most events can't match. Savinova v Semenya v Jelimo v Jepkosgei is like Juantorena v Ovett v Coe v Cruz. Throw in the new Ethiopian is like adding a young Konchellah into the mix. For sprint aficionados it's like having Lewis, Christie, Bailey and Greene all peaking in the same year. Then we've got as a sub-plot of the battle to be GB and US #1 - I think that will see an American running 1:55 and a Brit running 1:56 (Jackson?). Can't wait.
Re: Who cares......And the great thing is we're almost guaranteed a fast final and the leading protagonists will all bring something different to the final. Jelimo and Jepkosgei love to run off a fast pace while Savinova, in particular, is superb at running even-paced races. Semenya seems to be able to do both.
If Bolt is in top shape, I really can't see anyone beating him. Yes, the m100 could be the greatest ever race in terms of depth but it could easily be run in pouring rain and only a couple of guys break 10-sec. With the women's 800m, it's possible to make a case for any of the top four and the semi-finals are always a thrill.
Re: Who cares......
i totally agree about Jackson, i thought she was going to be a big gallumph but it turns out she's a pacey number the w800 is once again going to be the event of the trials as well 4 into 3 just doesn't go
Re: Who cares......Magiso is the fly in the ointment. She has real speed. 23.90, 52.09 and 1:59.17 last year as a Junior. Future WR holder if managed properly IMHO.
Re: Who cares......Look, a Jamaican getting in on the action
The whole world is getting on the w800m bandwagon
Re: Who cares......
Boss y'all need to chill. I was pulling for Quirot to beat Wachtel and Wodars when you guys were, well not watching (I presume you're a bit younger than me) I love the 800. Always have. Quirot is the one I thought could get to JK's record as she was pretty quick over 400, 49.xx iirc. LOL
Re: Who cares......
i can assure you were watching in 87
