Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayDid you all get your taxes filed today, it is your last day to file without penalty.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayTwo months ago with TurboTax.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayWell, I filed my extension..will file Oct 15 (or is it Sep 15?)
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
Correction: It is the last day to have your taxes paid in without penalty. Taxes are due. With an extension, you can file your return up until October 15th but taxes owed (if any) were due now.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
I stand corrected.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayUnless the rules have changed, taxes are not "due" today, nor need they be "filed" today; one merely need have the requisite paperwork in the mail and postmarked by midnight. No?
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
That is true but if the mailing of return or extension does not include payment of all taxes ultimately determined to be due expect penalty and interest.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax daySo is the first time that Emancipation Day has ever given us a dating of the 17th?
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
If you owe money at this point, the taxes are 'due', with penalties and/or interest for paying later. I had some materials go missing and so had to file an extension and for that I had to work through some of the complications that my tax preparer normally handle so that I had a reasonably good estimate of whether I was over or under (was under by a mere 110 but without accounting for a couple of credits that would give me a positive margin).
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayI know I've been late in the past (like by a day or two) and not gotten penalized.
I suspect they end up with mailrooms with an overwhelming amount of envelopes to process, and it would cost them more to start checking postmarks and crank up the dunning process for a day late than they make from getting the penalty money.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
And on the flip side, I have a client who paid with an extension by April 15th (proof via certified mail return receipt which ultimately won the argument) but the check did not get processed for about 12 days by the government. Despite the fact that the extension was accepted as timely, they kept reiterating that the payment was late, even though it was sent with the timely accepted extension. This in spite of the evidence we had. In the mean time, the taxpayer has to pay fees to fight it. It took months and going through about 6 people to prove that the payment was timely and the delay was the government's fault and to get them to "Get" it. There are simply not a lot of bright people working for the government.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayI don't know how he does it but my accountant debits my bank account to make tax payments.. happens instantly.. no problem with check delay..
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
Yes, that is easy to do now as long as you are willing to give up your bank information for such matters. Many people are not so trusting of their information and will not go for that. The case I was discussing was several years ago when electronic transactions were not so prevalent.
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax dayHave we gone viral on a nebbish subject?
Re: Today, Tues April 17 is tax day
I have done it for years via TurboTax, never had any problems, it is smooth, quick, neat and I think safer than sending a check through the mail.
