I'm going with Geb. I think having the benefit of chasing will tip the balance

This sounds fabulous and will get me up bright and early on a Sunday morning for the first time in ages.

It's really hard to say who will win as we have no idea of their form. Having said that I've learnt over the years never to bet against Paula and this is one time when I'll thoroughly approve of her going off hard from the start.

I think I'd give the nod to Haile. Being the chaser has to be an advantage and even though his form is unknown, he was still able to turn around his DNF in Berlin last year with a 61:29 HM on a hilly course in Birmingham four weeks later so I think Haile should be in similar-ish form to last year when he ran 60:18 last year seeing as he's had the best part of two months to recover from Tokyo.

That means Paula needs to be in 68-flat form which is a do-able, although it depends on how much the bronchitis has taken out of her. Apart from this though, it sounds like she's had a fairly non-problematic start to the season so hopefully she can put in a good performance.

We've been discussing this on AW and if you look at the Vienna Marathon website it seems to be counting down on GMT so looks like it's 8.50am here.

I'm getting up at 7.30am just in case.

Wise move - latest AW post points out they seem to have not adjusted to summer time on their website! Early start it is...

Geb apparently 6:18 behind at 5km... at this pace he's going to lose.

There's something wrong with the 6:18, though. It's what they keep saying but it doesn't match the splits... going by the splits Geb might well win.

I wish they had a time trial at major champs, it would reward people like Paula who take it out from the gun rather than those who just sit and kick. I would also like an Ekiden Relay in major champs to give distance runners a chance at a relay medal

Geb ran faster through 5K than Alan Webb did today in an open 5000.

What are Paula's pacemakers doing ? they're supposed to be pacing her not just running off !!

I think it's going to be really close, i want to see more of these races :D

What would the point be of an event that gives Kenya an automatic gold every time?

The latest splits and gaps indicate Geb is going to win very easily, but I'm somewhat wary of those splits and gaps now... maybe the 6:18 was the gap at 4km :?

3:42 at 9K? At this rate, he'll catch her with MILES to go.

So we should have events in case Kenya win ?? US are practically guaranteed 4x4 every time, maybe we should scrap it !!

also have you heard of country called Ethiopia ? they have some pretty nifty runners

They have nowhere near the depth that Kenya has, and if Ekiden were made into an Olympic event, I guarantee that it wouldn't be superstars running it. If you want to guarantee the Kenyans an Olympic gold, make the distance medley an Olympic event.
