Very young Olympic champion.

Postby gennady » Sat Apr 07, 2012 11:34 am

Today is April 7th birthday two Olympic champions. Their total age of 130 years, but one athlete is no longer with us. Together they have competed in four Olympics.
The first athlete to win his first Olympic Games at a very young age, and of course the athlete was not the favorite. For the second Olympics athlete was left without a medal.
The country, which is represented by an athlete, ranked first in the world in Olympic gold medals in this event.
The second Olympiad of the first athlete was first for the second athlete, and athlete won Bronze.
The second Olympiad was Golden for the athlete, and in this event occurred a kind of "castling" champions.
Call names of these athletes.

These athlete should be fairly close in age. So about 65 now and possibly the first won a medal in the range from 16-20. Thus the olympics in questions could be Mexico, Munich and Montreal.

OK I guess that is wrong. I can't think of any 'castling of champions' for Munich/Montreal Or am I missing an obvious one?

I guess they could be about 62 and 68, if they're both young champions. That would lead use to 64/68/72.

16-20 in Mexico City, close to the truth.

I'll have to let someone else take up the reins, or else I'm going to have to cheat ;)

I just got home from the Arcadia Invitational in Southern California (high school only). When I travel, I usually don't bring a computer.

So, two athletes with a total of two gold medals and one bronze medal. Sounds as if the first (older) is now dead and maybe took a fourth or fifth in their second Olympic Games.

A country with many gold medals in an event makes me think of the hurdles, shot put, and long jump (and maybe pole vault) for the United States.

The two athletes competed in the same Olympic Games (the Games where the first athlete got fourth or fifth). The first athlete won the gold at a young age. Must be in the low 20's.

Both athletes competed in the same Games, so they might be close in age. I'm guessing they are in their 60's. If the first was about 23 when they won gold, it might be 1968 or 1972.

Your event, gennady, was the long jump (my first event). A U.S. jumper with a gold and a bronze from that era sounds like Arnie Robinson (gold in Montreal and bronze in Munich).

I'm having trouble with the first person. Is it a woman?

The second champion castle of bronze into gold.
Keino was the 4th medal and Biwott only one.
The answer is no to both.

Yes DoubleRBar, it's really Arnie Robinson, who celebrated 64.
He was a Bronze (Randy Williams Gold) in 1972, and was a Golden in 1976(Randy Williams Silver).
Not quite a classic castling on the podium, but very close.
Happy birthday to Arnie Robinson!
He was the Best in the world long jumper of the decade 1970 - 1979.
Olympic Games
Gold 1976 Montreal
Bronze 1972 Munich
Pan American Games
Gold 1971 Cali
Silver 1975 Mexico City
World Cup
1977 Dusseldorf Gold
Seven National Titles + 2FOT

Yes Daisy! :D
Of course the first athlete is Colette Besson, and today she could be 66, but she died in 2005.
Indeed she is one of the youngest Olympic champions, and the youngest in 400m winners(18y.o). Her single Gold medal she won in Mexico City in 1968.
Indeed, France has the largest number of Gold Oly medals in women's 400m.
1968 Colette Besson FRA - 3
1992 Marie-Jose Perec FRA
1996 Marie-Jose Perec FRA
1964 Betty Cuthbert AUS - 2
2000 Cathy Freeman AUS
1972 Monika Zehrt GDR - 2
1980 Marita Koch GDR
1976 Irena Szewinska POL - 1
1984 Valerie Brisco-Hooks USA - 1
1988 Olga Bryzgina URS - 1
2004 Tonique Williams-Darling BAH - 1
2008 Christine Ohuruogu GBR - 1

Dear gentlemen!
I offer all my apologies for the mistake with the age of Colette Besson. :?
Apparently there was a temporary clouding of the mind.
Of course, in Mexico she was 22, and other numbers and facts were correct.
Despite my mistake Daisy gave the correct answer.
