A happy "accident".

Postby gennady » Sat Mar 24, 2012 6:05 am

Today is March 24 birthday of the three Olympic champions. Two of them are no longer with us.
They represented different countries in different events and have individual medals.
The eldest of them is the only athlete of his country, which made gold double on a single games.
Only one medal of the second athlete was 10th in this event for his country.
In order to win in this event, this athlete had set two Olympic records.
Formally, the third winner is the first champion in this event for his country.
How considered by many that an athlete won thanks to a certain situation in the competition.
Because of this, he earned the nickname, which is the name of a famous American movie eighties (four Oscars).
Call names of these athletes.
PS Sorry :?
The second athlete has one more silver medal.

So guessed medium age athlete in another topic.
Indeed, the tenth gold medal from 19 for the U.S. in 110H won Bill Porter in 1948.
In the semi-finals and finals, he established the OR - 14.1 and 13.9.
Now we can tell Happy birthday to Bill Porter !

Clue for Seniors.
Two events in which athlete has won it the most popular in his country.
Total in this country 14 Olympic champions in these two events M/F.

Clue for junior.
Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role in this movie has received the actor with the initials D.H.
The name of topic refers to this athlete.

I'm guessing the actor might be Dustin Hoffman. I believe he won the Oscar for "Rainman". Are you saying the athlete's event relates to Dustin Hoffman or the athlete shares the same initials as Dustin Hoffman (Dawn Harper)?

Maybe I'll write bad English.
The third athlete has a nickname as the title of the movie.
Tip for the title of the movie Best Actor in a leading role in this movie D.H.
Now you know Junior's nickname.
Perhaps he is called so not in all countries, but in his country he is called as "Rain Man" very often.

The athlete's nickname is Rain Man. Someone who performed well in the rain. I'm afraid you have me there. Anyone know this?

In which event the offensive heavy rain can be "happy" for one and "unhappy" to other athletes?
Go from Beijing down and remember, "Rain Man".

Clue for Seniors.
Two events in which athlete has won(classic double) is the most popular historically events in this country.
There are a total of 14 Olympic winners in these two events (M / F) for the country.
He is not American.

For "Rain Man" I thought of Jacek Wszola because of all the rain in Montreal. Not sure he was born in March.

Indeed, in the Montreal contest in high jump took place in the pouring rain, and rain was an accident for all, without exception.
You have correctly guessed the event. Now we have to guess the year and read the initial question.

Yes, it's Sergey Klyugin, who is in Sydney, managed to jump 2.35 before there was a heavy rain.
As the jumpers began attempting 2.35, rain began to fall. After the other six all missed, Kliugin sailed over cleanly on his first try. He jumped the last in the list. Almost immediately, the rain came down more heavily, and none of the second-and third-attempt jumps came close to a clearance. Behind the medallists came Javier Sotomayor, Stefan Holm of Sweden, Konstantin Matoussevice of Israel in fourth and fifth, and Mark Boswell of Canada and Staffan Strand of Sweden, tied for sixth -- all at 2.32.

So unhappiness for the other was a happy occasion for one.
Since then, many in Russia, even the TV commentators called Sergei Klyugin as "Rain Man."
A sufficient number of people believe that if it were not for heavy rain, it would not Klyugin Olympic champion, I do not belong to this part.
And late in saying Happy Birthday Sergey Klyugin. :D

I was thinking of champions with the Olympic double, like Peter Snell in Tokyo, and I remembered Albert Hill. He might fit your clues.

Finally it DoubleRBar. :D
So it really is Albert Hill, who at the age of 31-year, despite all the difficulties,
that were with him in England, and in Antwerpen, has made golden double 800/1500.
In addition, he has received a silver medal in the team race 3 000m.
Of course, middle-distance running is one of the most popular in the UK.

My congratulations to DoubleRBar and Happy Birthday to Albert Hill. :D

Your greetings and a question DoubleRBar!

Thank you, gennady. Albert must be pretty old now. I realize he must have died years ago.
