Deserved? That wasn't part of the exercise. This was about personal favorites. The #1 pick and #10 pick are nearly equal in my eyes.

Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
Just as well for the Pre fans that this was a ranking of your favourite athlete and therefore no standards of performance required. If a minimum qualification of: * A world championship; or *A world record; or * An Olympic championship was a requirement to be on the list then of the top 25 athletes in the list only Prefontaine would miss out. I knew Pre, although not particularly well, but did have a couple of drinks with him a few times. Our paths crossed a number of times between 1970 - 1974 as WSU and Oregon were often competing together. The man has been turned into a legend. He was a very very good runner. But he never achieved greatness as his untimely death took away that possibility.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
I missed this. So what you're saying here is that there's only 3 other sane people who voted? This planet would be in sorry hands if y'all were left in charge!!!!
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2What was the greatest surprise in the favourites listing for me?
It was the fact that the most favoured athlete only got votes from 17 out of 50 people who voted. Or 17 out of the 1,000 possible votes - given we all effectively had 20 votes. The 33 who did not vote for Gebreselassie had 660 chances to vote for him. With mump allowing us to vote for 20 athletes I find it quite astonishing that given the way he has transformed TnF that Usain Bolt could only get votes from 14 of the 50 people who voted. Which means 36 voters had 720 opportunities to vote for Bolt but didn't. This is just me musing after 4 long months.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
This turned out to be the unexpected beauty of the exercise: Reading about how a group of serious t & f fans have remarkably different lists of favorite athletes - especially learning about those favorite athletes of whom I had never heard. I'm glad our lists were so diverse.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
What should be obvious is I meant deserved to be personal favorite, ya big silly!
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2In the end this seems pretty anti climatic. This thread went on for eons and in the end the WINNER got 17 votes. Let's have a parade!
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2I had the top two, as well as seven others in the top 25
5 more in the 26-100 0 in the 100s 3 in the 200s 3 in the 300s This was not a surprise, as three of mine were sure to be at the bottom, with low votes from me, and 3 others had higher votes from me as their only ones; the rest of mine had at least 4 votes and almost half had 7 or more.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
Given the wide range of choice we have (male and females atheltes in so many different events that span over a century), I am not surprised that "only" 17 of 50 people voted for the most popular choice. Actually, it was remarkable that over one-third of people picked the same athletes (two of them). If this poll were on the favorite distance runners, of course far more people would pick Geb, including myself.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2I think I somehow was a "populist" in this voting. I had six of the top seven on my list.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2Right, I wouldn't have been at all surprised if something like 12 votes had been enough to win. I didn't have anybody in the top 25, but that wasn't really surprising either
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2I'd just like to say thank you to everyone for taking part in this and for the most part keeping it civil. Despite attempts at disruption by a few people at the beginning it's actually turned out rather well and certainly kept us entertained over the winter months. It's been informative, educational and extremely stressful.
There will be another one of these next year with a little more organisation in a few days i'll begin posting people's individual lists take the opportunity to comment on them if you wish to I'll also work out lists by points instead of votes, of male/female, country, event etc, unless someone want to do it for me (please someone do it for me) also an average vote for people with more than 5 votes.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2I can list them by event (or at least event group) but I don't promise to do anything else
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1mump - what happened to Glenn Hardin? You originally listed him as "Glen Stathardin" and then said he'd appear later with the right name and the right points but he never turned up...
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2Here is a list of our favorite favourites. To qualify the athlete needed 5 or more votes. Their points were then divided by the number of votes. The maximum score is 20.

Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
you're so in charge of counting next year but Michael Johnson must be wrong, he's 11.1 Haile is 13.2
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1
Not sure where he went i'll check tomorrow
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
Team effort, i like the sound of that
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
Except my table was completely screwed up
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
exactly, we don't want to change things too much next time, where's the fun in that
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1Ode to Rafer Johnson:
How sad - not a single vote for Rafer Johnson. But, wait, I voted for Rafer Johnson. How sad - a single vote for Rafer Johnson not counted. But, wait, even Santa checks twice. The crowds cry out, Give Rafer his due, a tie for 190th place. He earned no less.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1And I'm still embarrassed that I was the only voter egotistical enough to vote for him or herself, albeit in 20th place.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1
Don't be! It's good to like yourself! Plus, 6' 5" back in '65 was a great jump!
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1
Seriously, it's great you did it! What i want to know is why didn't mojo vote for her DH?
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1So my Top 5 finished
1. 69th 2. 57th 3. 5th 4. 36th 5. 96th so, y'know, I got that goin' for me . . .
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1Here is my top 5.
1. 11 2. 7 3. 185 4. 28 5. 202 The highest placement I got was with my #9 who placed 5th. My #3 was Shura Chudina, #5 Dana Zátopková. Reason for not voting for some regulars on this board was that I somehow assumed you should have followed the athlete's career, in retrospect an invalid consideration.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1Alright, who were some of the greats that got no votes?

I didn't participate (came into this late) but I was surprised to see that Kevin Young isn't on the list. I haven't looked very closely yet, but how many other world record holders didn't make the list?

Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No2
No need to stress - collecting and counting this sort of data is pretty easy and no need for special software or skills. Get people to submit structured data in something like a delimited text file, which anybody on any computer can easily produce. Then paste the data into a spreadsheet and convert text to columns. You now have data that a simple pivot table can use to count unique names (=votes) and sum the inividual rankings(=points) and sort in order. Ten minutes, go to whoa! You might have to do some initial checking on misspellings, name changes, reversal of Asian names etc but all quite simple. This is the lowest effort and lowest requirement for technical skills for both sender and receiver - anybody with spreadsheet skills can show you how. You can then spend more time planning the teasing releases rather than trying to get the count right.
Re: T T&FN Forum Favourite Athletes: THE RESULTS No1Really pleased Mutola finished inside the top-15.
And a big thanks for organising the thread, Mump! It's been a great history lesson and I'll look forward to the next one.

you lost me at 'delimited text file'
