He was in my top ten although a forget the exact location. I think this was due to the fact that I was in the stands the night he won gold in 19:32. That was ridiculous! I also witnessed him run 19.85 on a cold night in Edinburgh which was unbelievable too. I thought the clock had to be wrong that night.

I'm wondering if Bolt wasn't "hurt" by the fact that he's still competing; otherwise, his proximity to Michael Johnson is kind of funny. (When I measure personality, showmanship [he did run sideways through the 200 finish one year] and other things that endear fans to an athlete MJ comes up shorter than say Bolt, but...I like MJ. Performance matters!)

Until Bolt comes along Michael Johnson had the most DEFINITIVE performance on the track at an Olympics since 1968 (I don't count BJ's discounted 100's). And, many of us [read: me] just attributed Lee Evans' 43.86A to altitude and figured that it would take a heroic effort to break it...something achieved by Butch Reynolds with his 43.29 - a time that Reynolds would never again eclipse. Michael Johnson ran 43.86 or better 15 times, finally finishing with a WR of 43.18 (he still has the OR of 43.44).

And, then then he ran 19.32! WTF! 19.32! W? 19? T? 32? F? 19.32? Is that right? 19.32? Did you see that? 19.32! I can't believe it! 19.32! Did you see that? That's Unbelievable! 19.32! Did you see that? He ran 19.32! "NINETEEN THIRTY TWO!!!" Did you see that? "IT WILL NEVER BE BROKEN!!!" Un-eff-in-believable!!! Did you see that? (can I get an Amen if you reacted the same way)

And, he did it in GOLD shoes. I don't even think Flash wore gold shoes. The god Hermes had winged sandals and I don't think they were gold but I think it fitting that his sponsors name stands for god of speed and they had the foresight to make gold shoes. MJ was Bolt - before Bolt became Bolt. (and even HE is a fan of Bolt) The only thing Johnson has left is 43.18 that exists but for the whim of Bolt - and a trackandfieldnews favorites list one spot up. For now.

If there were a "Mt. Rushmore of Athletics" (or maybe this is for a different thread) I would put Johnson on it!

I had both Johnson and Bolt in my list but not super high. Johnson was 12th and Bolt was 18th. For Johnson, seeing the 19.32 in person makes it pretty much impossible to not have him on the list. I remember Marlow commenting, " what a terrible time for the timing system to malfunction". I don't know if that is what I thought, but I definitely was in shock when the time went up on the screen. For Bolt it is personality and performance. Bolt is the only athlete I really ever talk to non track fans about. When I talk to my daughter about Bolt, we have started just referring to him as "The Alien". His performances are simply other worldly.

I fail to understand why other athletes need to be put down in order to make Bolt look better. Is he not impressive enough in his own light, without any negative comments on other athletes?

He gave it all in the 200m final at Beijing, partly because he was heavily criticized for his antics in the 100m final. "Consumate professional"? I don't think so.

I have nothing against him, or any other athlete with "personality." But why do their fans feel the need to put down others in order to praise their hero?

Got to see him run his 200m WR at Atlanta. Even though I was new to T&F, it was obvious he did something extra special.

I didn't vote for Bolt although I like him. I just like at least twenty other athletes more.

To me he gets a little carried away with his dancing and all, but it's not hurting anything.

Translation? OK. I googled it, but that is definitely the first time I have ever heard that phrase.

All but two of mine are in, and those two are likely at the top (since they aren't otherwise on the list, and they owned their particular events while in their prime), although one of them is my #3 and the other is my #8.

This has been an interesting exercise - it reminded me of athletes who didn't make my list, and should have, but were victims of lousy memory. And if I were to do it all over again, several on my list would likely occupy different positions, since trying to separate favorites isn't a particularly easy task ("ok, what makes athlete number 13 better than number 14"), so I tended to simply group my favorites in relative, but probably not exact, order.

I only had 2 sprinters on my list - probably could have had a couple more
I only had one shot putter and one platter tosser
I only had 2 hurdlers on the list
Had 4 marathoners... (my #1 was Shorter)
That leaves 10 who were essentially 800 - 10K, most were milers (my #2 was Scott)
Only 2 females, both distance types... probably could have had a couple more (see below)

Jesse Owens should have been on my list, but since his accomplishments were way before my time, I got caught up in "who did I see and read about", rather than include those who blazed a trail for many more to come...

I was in love with Katrin Krabbe for a while... ahh, but the affair didn't last

My problem with Bolt is that he doesn't really have an obsession with the sport like many on this list. He is a good guy no doubt about it but I tend to admire passion over other qualities. Usain just happened to be really good from a young age and stuck with it for that reason. I don't get the sense that he is a PhD student of the sprints, or will have a long career. I feel like I relate more to guys like MJ, Carl, Ben, Ato, John Smith, Lee Evans, Steve Williams etc.

Despite what we may think, there are other things in life besides track

I think one of the things we have all learned through this thing is how hypocritical our selections and sentiments about our heroes are. I really admire guys who see the big picture and use their platform to be altruistic towards others. I would have voted Tommie Smith and John Carlos towards the top for this reason. Of course this clashes with what I just wrote. I think at the end of the day we are basically choosing people we like and forming reasons for liking them afterwords .

PhD student I assume that was big punch in the face to all Jamaica students who actually studied something. I hope no one here is serious about that.

I agree bman."liking" an athlete is rather like liking a friend or mate-you just feel an attraction or positive feeling towards people-it can be hard to rational or even understand but it is what it is.
This is why I won't enter into debates about it, much as the tguys would like us/me to.

Most of us do not really know the athletes we picked-they culd be complete jerks or the nicest people in the world. They could be Olympic gold medallists or "also runs". I don't really know why for example Bolt is not one of my favs-he has many of the attributes I look for and he seems like a great guy. Still I like many others more.

For example,from many accounts Mary Slaney is not a nice person but I idolized her growing up and those positive (ahem ahem) feelings are still there. She takes me back to being 15 and wanting to be half as good as she was. I think I trained just a bit harder and ran abit gutsier with her as a role model.

Not gonna overthink it-as I said before if I wrote my list now it would the same for the most part but I bet I would add and delete names based on my feelings that day (and also who popped into my feeble mind).

But my #3 is Zatopek. Talk about consistency... or lack thereof.

Of course, I didn't "see" Zatopek running, except in old film clips. So that might be the difference.

Both are the undisputed GOAT in their event, both have 2 Olympic Gold, both, one has 4 world champs gold medals the other would have at least 4 if the world champs were held in their era. One has world ranked No1 9 times in the same event, one was ranks No1 12 times over 3 events. One won 122 consecutive races, one broke 27 world records.

Ed Moses was my #12 and my last. Saw Moses compete a couple of times.
The 1976 silver medallist was Mike Shine who ended up replacing me as an assistant coach at USMA, West Point when my assignment at West Point was coming to an end.

I'm rather surprised with Ed Moses being so high, not because he doesn't deserve to be just because i didn't realise he was so popular, he's not someone you hear people talking about a lot. but i honestly can't think of anyone who is more deserving to be on this kind of list, absolute GOAT, lovely guy and a class act

That's exactly what I was going to say. I was shocked when I heard he'd ended up so high. Not that he doesn't deserve to be be just that despite his dominance his achievements seem to have been somewhat forgotten.

Obviously he was going to show up some where bjt he easily could have been in the 30's and I wouldn't have been surprised.

As it is I'm really glad to see him where he is.

The '87 WC race has got to be one of te greatest of all time in any event.

For the T&F fanatic, Edwin Moses is cherished not only for his records and championships won, but especially for the thoroughness of preparation. He studied the event and his own capabilities(13 all the way) like a law student for the bar exam - all in! You can't NOT admire a guy who 'appreciates' (in every sense of the word) what his event entails. He, like Jonathan Edwards, is a guy I tell my athletes about, in hopes that they come to understand what role preparation plays in an athlete's success.

I USED to be a huge Edwin Moses fan, but unfortunately what I remember MOST about him is that he seemed ungracious in defeat in '88. He also "implied" that he may have been beaten by PED's... Champions take their beatings and don't make excuses, it was such a letdown.

I want to believe that all that he did before that would occlude that moment but it doesn't, it really let the air out. But, he HAD mystique, he had dominance and he had the conqueror's headgear - but I'm not sure if it's that of a King or a Sorcerer.
