First HS junior over 60'

Postby Rye Catcher » Sat Mar 17, 2012 3:24 pm

In 1958, 2 HS junior shotputters went over 60', Jim Smith of Long Beach Poly and Dallas Long of North Phoenix High. Anybody know who did it first? Smith was a southpaw so he gets credit for being the first lefty junior over 60 feet.

Long was a senior in 1958, and threw 69 with the HS shot and 61 with the big boy shot. He ranked 2nd in the world !

Smith was 3rd on the 1958 HS list behind Long and Henry? Korn. Korn threw 64, Smith 61.

I know, but who was the first to hit 60' as a junior. Actually I was # 3 and Smith was # 4. Kicked his butt real good. He only got 3rd at the state meet at 58-9 1/2 where I won at 61-4 1/2. Korn actually threw 65-10 1/2.

re the above... I just checked my 1957 hs list.

Long threw 61-5 as a junior, 4th behind Branson, Mike McKeever, and Jim Wade.

Actually, Long's junior toss was behind Branson's 64-0 3/4, Robertson's 63-9 1/2, Locke's 62-7 3/4, Davis' 62-7 1/4, Vick's 62-5, McKeever's 62-4 3/8 and Wade's 61-5 1/8. 1956 and 1957 were banner years for the prep shotput. I still want to know if Smith or Long hit 60 first. BTW, I had an unofficial 60-6 after the competition at the 1957 CIF finals. Still have dirt from the hole.

Thanks for the compliment. Actually 1957 was the banner year for California shotput, 7 kids over 60'.

Rye - don't know if your were putting in '56 - but I have video of the '56 Cal State Champs and it has quite a few of the big boys - I'd guess 7-8 or so. One guy threw beyond the old wood curbing to stop the shots from rolling. Got nuthin on '57 - Got you as CB?

Dave Davis lived less than 200 yds down the street from us/me - but he was 10-11 yrs older than me. He would have been in your era and an LA City guy - not sure when City And CIF split or even if they were ever 'together'

In '56, I was a soph and threw 50-3. Dave Davis briefly held the Nation Prep Record with a toss of 62-7 1/2 before Homer Robertson threw 63-9 1/2 at the 1956 state meet. Canoga Park High was part of the LA section and did not participate in the CIF southern section competitions. In 1957, I threw 56-1 and did not qualify for the state meet. Clark Branson won in '57 with a new record of 64-0 3/4. 1958 was my year.

I'm still trying to find out if Long or Smith reached 60' first in 1957 as juniors.

Long reached 61-5 on 4 March 57 in a dual meet against Phoenix HS. Smith's first 60 was a 60-5 at the Compton Cup on 13 April 57.

In Southern California, we never threw the discus except in the state meet. The only time I ever competed in the discus was at the state meet. Had a pretty good day. All my throws that day were personal bests.
