Today in the national heptathlon championships (for the best heptathletes not in the NCAA)Trey Hardee threw 29 feet in the shot. I'm guessing he did it left-handed.

Is Hardee injured? Isn't he normally a pretty good thrower?

This was a matter of not testing the arm at all (he did throw right handed). The meet is pretty good though. I was just reading Zarnowski's website (linked from T & FN). Also, the winner at the NAIA meet, Robbie Haynie, got 5781 points.

So, Hardee NHs again and Klech ends up 2nd.

What are the stakes of this competition? does this mean that Klech is going to worlds?

No, the world competitors have been decided--it wll be Eaton for the USA. That should do.

I am sure Hardee intended to try ony one height due to his shoulder injury (recovering from surgery). I would expect he is actually quite happy with his form.

I don't understand the subtleties of this, I understand why Eaton can go, but why not the top 2 competitors here? Does the indoor national meet not serve as a trails for the US team?

No, they do not. The combined events at the World Indoors are limited to 8 Heptathletes and 8 Pentathletes, who are invited by the IAAF in accordance with the procedures set forth in the entry standards page for the Championships, which appear on the IAAF website.

Is Klech now an outside threat to make the US Olympic team?

I suspect Klech is better at the Hept than the Decathlon, although I am only guessing. He has speed etc., but not as much strength and when they add the two long throws his relative placing probably declines.

He also is not particularly close to a couple of underclassmen in the NCAA. Everyone knows (or should know) how good Gunnar Nixon is and his teammate is very good also. Wisconsin SO Cato won his second Big Ten title eased off at 5909 and he had much longer LJ and faster 60h (7.88) which would have put him over 6000 is he had gotten those marks at a different time of day. If you put those in to his first day score and then take his second day from his other Hept this year he would have over 6100 I think. Thus, Klech probably will not make the podium at NCAAs (and he only had one mark better than had Cato the previous weekend).

as far as the iaaf indoor multis, the iaaf invited the top 3 from this year's list, top 3 from the last year's outdoor lists and two extra competitors in their discretion.
