Assorted 2012 outdoor results

Postby andyjgt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:54 am

Following on with Gabriella's thread for indoor results that don't necessarily deserve their own thread, here's the outdoor thread (mostly for throws at the moment).

I'll start with some from Russia.

Lunyov memorial, Adler (RUS), 18 February (just winners unless noteworthy, in usual order DT-HT-JT)

Pishchalnikova 62.68
Khanafeyeva 65.01 (Sadova's daughter Viktoriya won junior event with 60.01)
Maksimova 60.12

Pishchalnikov 63.46
Litvinov jr 73.58, coached by father (Pronkin, coached by Sadova's husband and her father, won U20 6kg with 77.51, Terentyev, also coached by Litvinov sr, won U18 5kg with 76.30)
Makarov 83.39, Tarabin won U23 with 80.23, Janoyan 79.71 Armenian record

21 in April, I presume he is still competing as he did last year when he was over 64, 2nd at the Euro U23s and 4th at the WUG. I guess he was fully developed physically way before most people are, but there's still time for him to become a top thrower IMHO.

Young HJer Christoffer Bryan of Jamaica, not yet 16 jumped 2.20 (7-2 1/2) in February in Jamaica. He also has a 7ft jump this winter.
Last year he jumped 2.10, 2 days before turning 15. He might be someone to watch!

That is a world age-15 best, breaking the 2.18m set by Kenny Evans in 1995.

Be afraid, be very afraid. Now the men are starting to do when the women have been doing -- branching into other disciples with good effect. When we get our next lull on this board maybe our illustrious Jamaican posters can flush out what is happening and why (coaches getting good athletes and being able to work productively with them, etc.).

Lorraine Ugen posted a marginally wind-aided 6.83m at the TCU meeting too. Will be interesting to see if she can back this up.

Lorraine Ugen started slowly, don't know if she suffered some injury early winter, but she's been improving by leaps and bounds over the last few weeks, having set a 6.51m in Albequerque - had a very disappointing NCAAs with three fouls though.

A 6.83m on a 2.8m/sec tailwind tells me that she is definitely capable of something around 6.70-6.75m in legal conditions and I'd expect her to improve judging by the very early stage we lie at right now.

Mind you, she took only her first three attempts since she was running in the overlapping 100m where she set 11.61 secs (3.4m/sec).

Aside from that, I was particularly pleased to see Wallace Spearmon and Jeremy Warriner turn in some very promising performances that augur well for great things in summer. 10.06, windy or not, is some very good speed at this point for the 'Prince' and 20.66 on a 2.6m/sec tailwind for Warriner is proportionally the best he's ever run in March over 200m.

The Chinese Marathoners are back in form in time for London. Wang Jiali won in Chongquin in 2:22:41 ahead of Zhou Chunxiu 2:23:42 and Zhu Xiaolin 2:24:19. Guessing they will be the three representatives barring injury.

That's a great return to form for Zhou. She is now in her 10th season of international level competition, and has one of the best records of high-level consistent excellence through this period. After her disappointing finish in London last year (2:34:29 for 26th), I thought she was on the downhill side of her career, but this suggests she's still capable of running near to her best, as this time is 7th on her impressive all-time list . I think she's 33-34yo now. She must have one of the better top-5 averages, and certainly must be among the best for top-10, as follows, not to mention a very strong record in most of the recent int'l championships:

2:19:51 (2006 Seoul)
2:20:38 (2007 London)
2:21:11 (2005 Beijing)
2:23:24 (2005 Seoul)
[5] 2:23:28 (2004 Xiamen)
2:23:41 (2003 Beijing)
2:23:42 (2012 Chongqing)
2:24:12 (2005 Helsinki WC; 5th)
2:25:00 (2010 Guangzhou Asian Games; gold)
[10] 2:25:01 (2010 Seoul)
2:25:39 (2009 Berlin WC; 4th)
2:27:03 (2006 Doha Asian Games; gold)
2:27:07 (2008 Beijing OG; bronze)
2:28:42 (2004 Beijing)
[15] 2:29:58 (2005 Xiamen)
2:30:45 (2007 Osaka WC; silver)

Also among women's marathon results, noteworthy at least among USA marathoners:
Serena Burla 2:28:27 (3rd) Seoul Int'l Marathon
(PB by ~6 1/2 minutes)

Which is quite unusual for a Chinese athlete. See Bai Xue, the 2009 world champion, who finished outside 2:40 in the trials race. I suppose it helps Zhou wasn't one of these precocious juniors who ran super-fast times as a teenager and hasn't been able to maintain the same form. She seemed to come to high-level racing a bit later in her career which has probably helped her longevity.

Saying that Zhu Xiaolin is probably the anomaly. She ran her PB of 2:23:57 as an 18-year-old in 2002 but she has maintained good form all the way through (in fact her 2:24:19 yesterday was her second fastest-ever time!) It's quite funny because I remember watching her race over 800m and 1500m at the Birmingham International in 2006...without too much success.

I'm sorry but that's what I've got out of some reports I read around over his performance. Was that his very first race of the season back then? Anyway, I could use some thorough website with a strong database on American athletes if you can recommend one.

IAAF doesn't know about either the 20.66 or the 10.06. Where did those races happen?

tilastopaja.org is the best place (by far) I know of for this kind of stuff. You have to pay for full access, but if someone is in the current top 20 for the year you can usually click on there name and get historic data going back many years.

I was actually enquiring about a website with a good database that I could find anything that every US athlete has done in any single event that one has contested in one's career, just like POT in Britain. I'm aware of Tilastopaja but thankyou anyway. :-)

If I'm reading her bio correctly, that's Trotter's best 200 time since 2006. Shouldn't make too much of one race -- but it at least seems worth noting.
