Walking on water is not an event contested in most track and field meets.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA

Pre and Frank Shorter tied! That would piss off Pre. He was my number 2!

I actually started running/jogging after watching "Without Limits" for the first time.

I went right out to the "local track" immediately after the movie and ripped off a 28:43 5K.

You know, it is pretty ironic Shorter and Pre tied. (I had Shorter 2nd and Pre 4th.) Same era, both US distance guys, both to Munich, both thoughtful about things but intense, fought the AAU and their regulations, and even had some memorable head-to-head meetings on the oval. (How about this...both with memorable mustaches.)

There was a quote on Nurmi in Leichtathletik (cited after a contemporary newspaper article written after he had won his ninth gold medal), that describes him perfectly:

"Und Nurmi ging, die müden Schuhe auszuziehen".

Roughly translated: "And Nurmi went to take off his tired shoes".

I voted for Kelly. I remember being bored during my Y8 summer holidays and I ended up watching the Olympics because I had nothing else to do and it was Kelly's 800m victory which gave me the athletics bug. I'd always had a faint interest in the sport but I was still an uninitiated spectator and I remember watching her through the rounds and thinking 'what's she doing? Why is she at the back' but I guess it worked out pretty well for her. :P

Shorter was my number 2. Like all the other athletes on my favorites list, I rooted for him and much enjoyed watching him compete. But Shorter more than any other athlete influenced my life. I'm not sure I would have competed after college if not for his example. Furthermore, his approach to training - how many days in a row did he run, something like a thousand? - motivated and inspired me (though I later had to unlearn a few of those lessons).

Pre was not on my list, though going in to the Munich Olympics, he was among my two favorite athletes (along with Ryun). After reading the SI article the first time he was on the cover (was that 1970? If so, I was 14), he became my model. I learned all I could about his workouts. His gutsy though tactically foolish race in Munich was exciting and inspiring (as well as didactic by teaching me not to try to change gears too many times). But the posthumous hero-worship of Pre turned me off. For me, he was kind of like a high school crush that you can't take your mind off of for a few months, but then you forget about as you mature.

I cower upstairs by a desktop, but I will do it, actually started it already. With more than 400 names, it may take me a couple of days. I have already discovered errors that should be easy to fix.

Valery Brumel

Brumel was my #1.
As a kid in the late 50s and 60s he was my first and absolute hero.
I was a high jumper back then and I can vividly remember the first time I straddled, 5' 0" and then a few years later 6' 0" and all the time I was trying to emulate Brumel.

Sadly I never got close to him although I eventually straddled over 2.00m goofing around at WSU.

Already gone. And three of my list, still to come, don't appear on that list. And I can think of one other who is sure to be top 5, although not on my list.

Got home from officiating at a Last Chance meet. My 9-year old had shoveled much of the driveway and learned a few things (like push it and avoid lifting it if you can). There was still a fair bit to shovel, including moving his piles off.

There are still seven [opps, not six] on my list after losing 3 or 4 today.

Of the six I have left 2 brits, 2 yanks, 1 Ethiopian and 1 New Zealander, they are my number 1, 2, 8, 10, 18 and 19.

There goes my number 3. Best running style ever. Nobody looked as as smooth and relaxed running 1:42/43 week in and week out.

Exactly. I had him at #13. Sitting at home for 96 was a disaster for the sport as well as for him. Our rules seem so archaic sometimes, I just want to see the best compete.

Considering the bias of the manager of this event, add Paula Radcliffe. We're definitely going to see some Brits in the top ten.

With those addtional 7 plus my 21 making a total of 28 means that 7 of these fabulous athletes didn't get a single vote.

Except I screwed up and Xiang Liu and Yuri Syedich have already come up. I missed Syedich because of spelling and I missed Xiang Liu as his family name is Liu not Xiang. Therefore I get to amend my list of 21 by choosing 2 of the magnifcent 7.

And I now add Michael Johnson and Paul Radclliffe to make up my guess list of 21.

ahhh..... suspicions confirmed: the voting demographic has a lot of young Brits.

At least one middle-aged Brit voted for her as well. She epitomises the maxim that 'good things come to those who wait'. If I was a coach I'd keep a copy of her autobio in the kit bag to share with any athlete picking up frequent injuries. She's responsible for two of my favourite ever moments in athletics. Firstly, there was the sure audacity of a semi-fit athlete kicking like that with 200m to go in the Sydney final. Then there was the moment in the Athens final, half way down the home straight when it occurred to me that maybe Mutola wasn't going to come past her (I 'd been punching the air, jumping up and down and screaming like a loon from 100 to go, celebrating the fact she had a medal sown up). Since then I've loved the way she's put so much back into the sport with the On Camp With Kelly project.

By the way if you lot have voted Coe above Ovett, I'm leaving the Forum.

(Bet that's an upsetting thought for everyone).

In this list you are leaving out someone that has been tipped somewhere above as the (obvious) overall number 1. I am not sure that she will be number one but she will likely be close I do not think that Bolt is nearly as dominating as this person, Female, multi-event World record holder for a quarter of a century (no one coming remotely close).

Also missing from that list is another American female athlete who could easily end up winning the whole thing... (I never liked her one bit, but she seems to enjoy widespread support here.)

As a 'young Brit', I did not vote for Kelly Holmes. She's a great athlete and I was thrilled when she won double gold in 2004, but I wouldn't class her as one of my top-20 favourites.

Why is everyone trying to pre-empt the result with all these lists and guess work. Mump's said he'll be finishing the list within the next week. Can't people wait?

Personally I don't see what the hurry is. I'd like just a couple of names a day until the top 10 and then a while off for the WI's before resuming with 1 a day for the final reveal.

Why are people so impatient?

What about Evelyn Ashford? She is my #2.

P.S. I'll edit the list with Liu's correction.

Evidently we're going to have some prominent athletes that some think will be top 20 who received NO votes . . .
