Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2013Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2013The 2011 Aussie Aussie Aussie thread has been going for a coupla years now, so probably time to start a new one.
The old thread is here - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34155 Last edited by Vault-emort on Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:09 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Starting the thread off with a bit of topical stuff:
Nathan Deakes looks like he's added to the Olympic Team at 50k Walk. Hunter Track Classic this Saturday - start lists are here: http://www.athletics.com.au/home/compet ... /startlist - Women's 400m is the most interesting sprint event. - 1500m fields for both sexes look pretty good. - Dani and Benn in the disc. - Josh Ross has his first serious 100m of his comeback.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012The Aussie season is up and running with only a month until the Olympic trials in Melbourne. This weekend's Perth meeting has a number of decent fields with Women's Discus, Men's LJ and Men's 400 probably the strongest in terms of depth.
In other events, Sally Pearson will make her 2012 hurdles debut while Ryan Gregson will race Craig Mottram in the 1500. A dozen US athletes and a handful of other internationals provide some competition for the Aussies with conditions in Perth often favouring sprinters, horizontal jumpers and discus/javelin throwers. Unfortunately a still underdone Steve Hooker has withdrawn, while local javelin star Kim Mickle and sprinter Jody Henry are also missing. In their absence, Ben Offereins will seek to be the local hero; he runs in a strong 400m field featuring American Greg Nixon and a few of Australia's best including national champ Steve Solomon, former Commonwealth Games champ John Steffensen and former WSG Champ Sean Wroe. Alana Boyd, now living in Perth, could also challenge Kym Howe's national record and outdoor best. Fields include: 100 Pearson Breen 200 Breen van Veenendaal Brennan 400 Steinert Baker USA Sargant Cuddihy IRL 800 Manou Hetherington Noack Buckman Smit NZL 1H Pearson Ali USA Miller NZL Wheatley 4H Boden Spence USA Harding GBR PV Boyd Parnov Parnov LJ Perkins Stratton Jaensch DIS Samuals Brown USA Thurmond USA Ackman USA JAV Mitchell Patterson USA 100 Rouge-Serret Davies Hough Ross 200 Rouge-Serret Davies Hough 400 Offereins Nixon USA Solomon Wroe Steffensen 15 Gregson Mottram 4H Garrett USA Gaymon USA Cole Boino PNG Brandwood GBR PV Hollis USA Boyd Pocklington HJ Zamel-Paez Armet Lodge LJ Lapierre Stevens Crowther TJ Frayne Jones Oke NGR DIS Harradine Winger USA JAV Robinson Peacock Outzen Full entry lists: http://www.athletics.com.au/home/compet ... ntry_lists First event scheduled for 1830 Perth time on 11 February. Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Here's why Steve Hooker won't be competing. A lack of confidence has caused him to pull out of all domestic meets - including the Olympic trials...
http://www.theage.com.au/sport/pole-vau ... 1rkcq.html
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
This probably warrants its own discussion, but Hooker is not the first top level vaulter to lose his nerve. This sounds awfully close to what happened with Tommy Skipper 4-5 years ago. He just stopped being able to plant the pole. Good luck to him. That seems to be awfully difficult to come back from.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012My best to Steve but here is something to think about.
Isn't it great that the A.A. are looking after him and helping him in everyway they can to get him back to top shape. I personally I think it is fantastic and is the way it should be done. Now lets look at our USATF and how they would work with our Champion's given the same situations. Are you looking. I am too, however I see nothing. Oh wait that is the same thing they do. NOTHING How sad.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012I think something like this happened early in Hooker's career too, though it may not have been as severe and it certainly wasn't as public. Watching him in Daegu was like watching a completely different athlete to the one who won in Beijing, Berlin, Melbourne, etc etc - he just looked like somebody who wanted to be somewhere else. It was heart-wrenching. Hopefully he can bounce back soon - he's such a great athlete and one of the genuine good guys of the sport.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
I agree. Its looks more head than anything else. Doesn't seem like he wants to compete if he can't win. And if he thinks he can win, he does win. Seems like its easier to quit smoking.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Stream is working well from link above. Henry Frayne has twice beaten his PB in the TJ and leads with 17.14
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
The stream is working so well at my laptop that I have been drawing stick figures and then smudging them so that I can't quite see what I've just drawn. Roll on the NBN......
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Liver results seem randomly delayed. Event 22, W200 is up but Event 4, MDT with 3 competitors is not, along with Event 16, the W400H, although Event 17 onwards is, so it's not just the usual field events that get updated 3 hours after the last event is finished.....
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
really? I'm using a wireless USB and haven't had a millisecond of buffering throughout. Best livestream I've ever seen. The direction and some of the commentary, however.... Anyway congrats to Frayne, Alana Boyd and Lauren Boden (as well as Sally) for the performances of the night. Most results a bit disappointing though..
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012In case you're after the M DIS results, 65.46m won it for Winger. 63.40 for Harradine.
Boden won in 55.61 about 3.2 seconds ahead of second (Pekin from memory).

Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
Worked well on the third try, just in time to see Alana's last vault from an obviously cheap, multi-purpose camera location. Flakiness must have been local issues. Like I said, roll on NBN.
Glad I didn't spend the coin to head overland - there's certainly some real sadness in AS's post. I hope to see better (live) at the trials in a few weeks but the chances seem as high as a redhead's vault....

Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Sally Pearson runs a ridiculously long season.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
She does? Last year weren't the comments that she ran a short (European) season? What if she was a European or US hurdler currently running 60s and 60Hs and aiming at the WIC as well as the OG? Anyway, her programme seems to be working out just fine. Since 2007 she has only failed to achieve her major goal during one season (2009 injury).
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Oh, if she doesn't win Gold at the Olympics, that's perhaps the biggest upset in my mind, but her outdoor season started really early. It doesn't seem to hurt her.

Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
She had a good double tonight and a fast time in the 100H though she smacked the last hurdle.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
I couldn't make the distance to Sydney, so had to rely on the inconsistent Telstra online coverage and the reliably unlive for field events AA website. Still, as usual, I have an opinion on things I neither saw, nor know much about...
Steffensen looks like he is heading back to his top form and is likely to get an A qualifier in the Australian season. Rudisha shames the rest of the Australian one-lappers. Fantastic time for Riseley if he did run that time off a 130km training week. Just keep that differential to WC Kiprop in the northern season and all will be well.
Birmingham runs just slightly slower than his Brussels PB of 3:35.50 from 2010, so looks like he will be the new Mottram if he stays uninjured.[edit to add: the only Australian that seemed to have any idea was GeeTee who predicted a 3:35.91 for Collis on runnerstribe. If only he could manage to post his infinite predictions here as well
Cole was on course for a sub-50 until he slightly stuffed up 9 and then almost came to a complete stop on 10.
If Kipchoge was paid to pacemake, he was a failure out in front by 50m+ after 400m. Abdi still ran well enough to make an A and beat his own meet record of 8:22.98.
Frayne becomes only the second Australian to go 8m/17m after Phil May (8.04/17.02A) in '70 and Mexico OG and LaPierre starts to show some better form in the Oz season (at least compared to last season).
That's a pretty good one day(3 hour!) double for somebody on their off season. [edit to add:John Godina managed a single-day double of 21.95m/67.06 on 9 June 2001 on Palo Alto.] Aussie Ben Harradine did not compet in the discus due to a knee injury. No detail from the commentary (grrrr) so I assume that it is the same problem that has affected him since last year.
Only 4 hundredths off her PB of 23.02 (-0.4) set in 2009 so easily her best run of all time.
The 4x400 looks like a real winner....
Tamsyn replays every year since 1997 and makes all the competition look mediocre. No wonder I love her.....as an athlete.
The 1500 Tamsyn for the next decade. Nuff said.
Well, in heavy training(assumed), no competition, thinking about a later 200m, smashes the last hurdle and still beats her 2009 meet record of 12,81 and runs her fastest Australian season hurdles ever, including her 12.81 (-1.1) last year on her way to her WC 12.28.
Boden sneaks under the A qualifier even though her last few hurdles were sub-optimal. Looks like she is well on her way to a mid-54 later in the year. Well done to her and coach Matt Beckenham.
Boyd has apparently transferred her yips to ginger boy and is now consistent over 4.60 in her last 3 comps. The Parnovs seem likely to both be over the A qualifier of 4.50 by the end of the season. Are there any other family PV combos of similar standard?
At 33, Kerrie seems to be back at her best and is looking capable of beating her 2006 PB of 6.66 and hitting the A qualifier of 6.75. The names at the top of the Oz all-time list all seem...
Valerie beats her meet best of 20.57 from 2010 and falls agonisigingly short of the Australian all-comers record of 20.69m set by world record holder Natalya Lisovskaya in 1985.
Samuels is slowly picking up distance but the lack of coverage prevents me from commenting on whether there is hope or depression to arise from this...
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012
Solid run, though his post-race interview was rather subdued for the IJWT icon.. Still, he did enough to have at least one section of the crowd booing his comments.. I quite like Torrence, but the little b@$+@rd cost me a new pair of shoes and a singlet! And a very welcome return to the 400H by Tristan Thomas. Still underdone, but if he has good health he can get the OQ mark by cut-off time.
lol I remember thinking, just after the gun, 'he's not gonna be one of these pacemakers who keeps going, is he?..' His 8-19 <ETA> is (oops) not a PB though
Hank one of very few shining lights so far in 2012 and will join Uncle Bruce in the Olympic lists Most athletes would be happy with a 12.66 WL in the hurdles, but Sal looked soooo pissed not to have broken 23. Miss Lewis would have gone sub 2-00 in previous years after good pace and a 600m split which I'm sure was pretty decent, but Mrs Manou just didn't have it in her legs up the straight. The aths scene downunder will not be the same next year. I'm presuming McKnight and Clarke are injured?
Well of course, there are the Boyds!
old?
Well the MLJ, MSP, MDIS, and WPV were also ignored by the director..and that didn't seem to stop ya!
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012SBT boomed her biggie on her first throw. 63m at this time of the year is very good, and she showed some signs technically of having something big later on. Still rather eratic in comps also threw what looked like mid 50s, but there also was a long sector foul looked also like 61 + maybe more. This is an olympic year and she will be a factor.
Dani got better as the comp went on her 60+ looked very good, but does not seem to have same bounce she used to have when around the competition Sally's 12.66 was very business like, if you did not know the time it could have been a training run, no interview afterwards, straight off the track (missed the 200m as we tried to beat the crush from the stadium next door, failed in that and spent the next 45 minutes in the car park) Boyd looked physically better than I saw her last (2 years ago) and on one of her 4.70s she was over the bar, and came down on it. Sometimes she penetrates the pit really well and takes it off with her legs going way higher than the bar, but on this one she was a little shallow, and came down on it. She has 4.70 in her, but must get the penetration in the pit just right. Our seat was exactly opposite the bar, great seats. I admire the two Parnov girls enormously I just wish they could get more speed (something we all need) and over on the right Val was having a real party. Opened on around 20.09 then had a couple more at or near 20m (she walked out on something that any other shot putter in the world would love to have around mid high 19s) and threw 20.61 and finally 20.67.. she and Sally were the stars (just like in Dageu) and Frayne was too far away to comment on, but is someone whose days have come.. Shirvo ran in the celebrity race, which just highlighted how much our sprint corp has fallen Last edited by GMH454 on Sun Feb 19, 2012 1:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Frayne's A qualifier in the LJ shifts the pressure onto Fabrice Lapierre (and R.Crowther) to get to 8.20m+ ASAP.
With Watt preselected, there's no way a B (8.10-8.19m) is going to cut it. Here's hoping Frayne can get the very demanding TJ A (17.20m) down here in Melbourne.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012Sally was all out, and far from businesslike in any of her races. She goes hard, and the times show it.
Steffensen is progressing as planned. Way too much made of his JOKE in Perth, and his personality is sorely needed as Hooker battles the yips and Sally complains about rolling starts and not breaking 23 in the 200. Great runs by Tamsyn and Birmingham and Boden! Overall fun meets to be around, need more venues like these around the States, to get butts in a seats and crowd noise. Looking forward to Melbourne!
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012I just hope it doesn't get as messy as women's 400m was in 1992.
Re: Aussie Aussie Aussie - 2012I see the Aussie team for the World Indoors was supposed to be announced around 20 Feb.
Qualified athletes: Jeff Riseley (800/1500) Ryan Foster (1500) Collis Birmingham (3k) Ben St Lawrence (3k) Craig Mottram (3k) Mitch Watt (LJ) Henry Frayne (LJ/TJ) Dale Stevenson (SP) Sally Pearson (60/60H) Alana Boyd (PV) Be good to see at least Boyd and Frayne join Sal on the team and get some more experience at top-level.
