Veronica vs Felix over 60m at US Track Classic Feb 11

Postby notorious » Mon Feb 06, 2012 6:56 pm

This should be no contest and VC should win easily. Based on her race at the US Open on January 28th, I am looking for VC for run close to her PR of 7.00.

She has run 7.04 on that Track in Arkansas before.

With a 60 best .32 faster than Felix, I agree it should be a blowout. The interesting thing to see will be how Felix measures up against her 2004(!) PR of 7.32.

Felix needs the 60 about as much as the Giants need another pass rusher.

USATF/Nike needs to sell 5500 tickets, and she's the marquee Nike track athlete.

USA Track and Field thinks that they are slick. On their home page cover story of the meet, it shows a picture of the 2007 World Championships womens 200m with Felix beating Veronica. lol

Huh? why would USATF not promote the US athlete.

Before the next Bolt and Gay clash, would JAAA having a picture of Bolt losing to Gay in Stockholm?....

VCB all the way, which is to be expected. Felix tweeted a photo of a set of starting blocks so its clear she's working on her starts. Given her build and strengths as a sprinter, Felix is never going to be 60m athlete but the race should help build some 'drama' throughout 2012 when these athletes meet again... I doubt if they'll race over the 200m before London anyway.

Interesting to see double world champ Michelle Perry on the start lists for the 60mh. Tilastopaja has her last results from 2009 so perhaps some maternity leave?

As I said earlier, it will be interesting to see how Felix's 60m in 2012 compares to her PR of 7.32 from 2004. "Start work" or not, not improving on a PR she set at age 18 would raise some questions, and very well could see her not make the final.

I hope Veronica runs close to her PR of 7.00 or better yet, challenge the Jamaican record of 6.96 held by the great Merlene Ottey.

Veronica will need such great starts if she expects to win in London.

VCB all the way unless she false starts. I am a little worried about that rolling start. If she gets a decent start then it would be a blow out.

I haven't seen any close up footage of VCB's 50m to judge if her start is the same as her 2011 attempts, but I would rather she get called up on it now by a starter and DQed before she gets busted in the JAM trials or worse still, in London.

Am I being naive to assume that someone at the IAAF wouldn't tap her on the shoulder to say that what she's doing is illegal and we will pull you up on it if you try and do it again?

VCB seems like a person of principle and not one to cheat. Perhaps she believe's she's within the rules at the moment and if she doesn't record a DQ on the blocks, she's ok?

Can anyone think of any other sprinters who've adopted a similar approach?

Has anyone looked to see if she does the same thing in the 200m?

Didn't the 168St MillroseGames announcer her as commited? .
I seem to remember her photo on a few promotional e-mail press releases.

You are correct.

Press releases earlier in the year did have Felix running at Millrose Games. I guess USTAF strongarmed her to run in at the USA Classic instead.

The Millrose Games is also this Saturday.

Shame on Felix for pulling out of Millrose to run in Fayetteville this week.

These were her glowing words upon committing to Millrose back in November -

Allyson Felix wrote: I love racing in New York City, the energy is always incredible and I'm glad the Millrose Games are a part of my journey to London

Disappointing in and of itself, but lists toward hypocritical when you remember that she told Philip Hersh after Worlds last August that is was important to "keep her word", and compete at Weltklasse despite the fatigue of her efforts in Daegu.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011 ... bob-kersee

Philip Hersh wrote:The 25-year-old is the kind of person who honors commitments, and long ago she had made one to run at the Zurich Weltklasse meet, often called the ``one-day world championships."

Yes, there is money involved -- an estimated $40,000 appearance fee. But Felix already makes enough for dollars not to get in the way of good sense. This was more about good intentions.

"I'm trying to keep my word even though I was debating," she said.

Hersh may want to reconsider that observation about the kind of person who honors commitments...

Come on, guru, she still ran in NY...it just wasn't Millrose. Same thing as far as I'm concerned (it's not like Millrose is still in the Garden). Plus, Hersh, the muslim-hating, PED accusing, hack, had no right to divine her intentions.

Regardless of what meet Felix runs in, it's kinda missing the point. Which is this: Who in the heck wants to see her run the 60 meters?

Yeah, just fork over top dollar to see someone run in an event that's not even her specialty, an event that's clearly her weakest of all the sprints.

Oh, I know all about Felix "using" the meet to work on her start, but as a ticket holder, I would not want to be "used" that way. But that's track in an Olympic year. The top athletes will use meets as a glorified practice session, whether you like it or not, and avoid competing against their main rivals as much as possible until the Games.

A niche sport needs more great races/matchups, not less, but such is life when an entire year comes down to one meet.

This is a pretty interesting men's 400m field. I'd love to see where LeJerald Betters is right now. I know that Pinder is running really well this indoor season, and of course Kirani James is Kirani James. Perhaps we see a 45 low?

I would agree, The Reggie Lewis track he ran the 45.9 last week, is hardly even banked. If everything is clear at the break, sub 45 should be expected.

one of the 5 or 6 that went sub 45 is...Kirani James
3 of the races were... on the Fayetteville track

agree sub 45 can not be expected but if it does not Beamonesque

unless of course he goes into the Butch Reynolds area under 44.5

Anyone know when or if Jeter intends to run indoor this year?

Ever since 2009 when she made her big break through she has been running indoor. In fact her best season to date (2009) she ended that season with the fastest 60m time for that season (7.11). I know it is relatively early in the indoor season but I have not heard anything about her running any indoor meet, I would think this would be a good tune up or 'check' at least to see where she's at compared to other season.
