Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardActually I think this is more in the spirit of this thread.
'A man who suffered a 25,000 volt electric shock when he climbed on top of a train to retrieve a shoe has died.' http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11379713

Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin Award
Though the person in the photo isn't a candidate for any safety awards, his smoking is not lethal unless there's a leak somewhere.
Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardPerfect example of an oxymoron.
Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardIt is hard comment on this for obvious reasons. But the guy is a moron, for multiple reasons. He jumps in front of a moving car... Blago never had supporters like that.
Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardSince I don't want to violate forun rules, I submit without comment.

It's more like groundhog day than Darwinian.
Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardThis story hits close to home since it happened at a house right behind my Dad's house. He said that not only did the sound of the blast wake him up, but he felt his house shake as well.

Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin AwardI believe you actually have to die in order to win the Darwin Award.

Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin Award
In the spirit of accuracy, I've edited the title of the thread.
Re: The Latest Candidate for the Darwin Award
Not quite. http://www.darwinawards.com/rules/ So how are the Darwin Awards actually determined? Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way. They are self-selected examples of the dangers inherent in a lack of common sense, and all human races, cultures, and socioeconomic groups are eligible to compete. Actual winners must meet the following criteria: Reproduction Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile. http://www.darwinawards.com/rules/rules1.html Excellence Astounding misapplication of judgment. Self-Selection Cause one's own demise. Maturity Capable of sound judgment. Veracity The event must be true.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin AwardI see something of a contradiction there. People who are sterile are, as far as I'm concerned, still members of the human race. Many sterile people lead full, productive lives. Maybe those who carelessly shoot their balls off should get some kind of award, but it should not be one that requires that they've eliminated themselves from the human race. It just ain't the same thing.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin Award
I'm pretty sure that's the point - it's for people who have killed themselves or rendered themselves sterile through their own stupidity.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin AwardYes, but they describe the Award thus: "Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way."
Yes, there are other ways to improve the gene pool. But in one place, they seem to have limited nominations to those who've eliminated themselves from the human race. Their words, not mine.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin Award
I still don't follow you. Sterile people are still part of the human race, so if a person's stupidity leads to their own sterility, that would qualify according to the rules.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin AwardBut it wouldn't qualify if, in order to be nominated, you had to eliminate yourself from the human race. And that's the wording that they use in one place.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin Award
Both of you are right.. The website's rules are contradictory... The first thing stated in the Rules Section of the website is this: "So how are the Darwin Awards actually determined? Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way." Then a few paragraphs later this: "What are they? The Darwin Awards commemorate individuals who protect our gene pool by making the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives: by eliminating themselves in an extraordinarily idiotic manner, thereby improving our species' chance of long-term survival. In other words, they are cautionary tales about people who kill themselves in really stupid ways, and in doing so, significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race." But then they also say later that self-caused sterility, even if one has already passed his or her genes on to offspring, can also make a person eligible for the award... Maybe they need to edit their rules section. I think I'd rather see the award given posthumously only...
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin Award
That was my point.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin AwardI guess Gandee would actually qualify as a candidate, not a future candidate.

Doesn't count ... he didn't die or become sterile as a result of that ultra-stupid act.
Re: The Latest Future Candidate for the Darwin AwardOkay, here is one, or maybe just bad luck. You decide!
