Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Headed to FSU on a football/track scholarship, Bracy goes 6.08 in the 55m at the Jimmy Carnes Youth Invitational in Gainesville.
I know that HSRs are very difficult to maintain and track, but a few people on Facebook/Twitter are claiming it to be one. Link: http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/r ... 2710.story
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Well according to the records listed on T&FN, the old record was 6.14.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Going beyond HS lists, it's the fastest 55m performance in the world since 1999. It's also just 0.01 away from Leonard Scott's world junior record. Based on the 55m/60m ratio at the top end of the world all-time list (using times set within the same season), a 6.08 is worth around 6.54 for 60m.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Probably worth noting that this wasn't a huge meet as far as I can ascertain, so there may be some validity to having doubts around the timing.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
uhhh.... not they're not.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
Handled by one of the top timing companies in the southeastern US. http://www.halfmiletiming.com/
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Considering that he's run 10.05 +2.2m/s, 6.08 isn't unreasonable at all.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
Well, thank you and gh for showing me the error and amateur of my ways. I will wait until I have fifty or so years of hardcore track and field experience for posting a news item again.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08From watching the video... Looks like he may have caught a bit of a flyer.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
link so we can judge for ourselves?
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
We are all fans here and this is an exciting development. Let's hope this kid is too small to make it in football or just decides he doesn't like to get hit by big lineman.

Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Wow that does look like a false start, and the fact that the sound goes off in the video doesn't help determine when the gun actually went off.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
While they all whine about a false start, it looks like the smoke is just ahead of him reacting. And a telephoto lens negates any evidence of sound. Its too far away. If he got a flyer, it was a good one. It looks more dramatic due to the difference in talent. That kid can run.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
But its judged based on the sound of the gun, not the smoke or the gun flash.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08I tried to trap the first frame with smoke and it seems to have Bracy moving slightly (as is someone to his right, I think). I cannot tell from this video, but it might be a 0.100 start and possibly a 0.08 or lower.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08that kid can fly down the track ! he said that he will run in the usot. still it would be a huge upset if he even made the relay pool. when was the last time an 18 yr old made the men's team in the sprints ?
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
Forget the team, making the finals would be a major upset at his age!
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
I did the same and see the smoke and then Bracy. The problem is that it LOOKS like a jump because the kid next to him got left in the blocks. It may may been an excellent 'anticipation', which is the nice way of saying he guessed right. Too bad we don't have the RT, cuz it sure seems close to .10.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Forget the team, making the finals would be a major upset at his age!
making the final would give him the possibility of relay pool invitation. if he was able to go 10.05 slightly winded aided at 17 yrs old last year, who knows how much faster he could go in eugune in the summer with much better competition to pull him along. plus it is not like the rest of the american sprinters are producing many sub 10 times in the last couple of years.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Sub 10.0 HS record... That is a tantalizing thought. Let's hope this kid is able to develop more between now and June.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08In the 10.05 he ran, he pulled up at the end IIRC.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Great young talent, that is obvious. If football doesn't gobble him UP maybe someday..... Doesn't matter too much about whatever went down record wise.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08It was a good start, imo. Smoke apparent before runners moved. Bracy just left the field in the blocks.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08worth noting, his 60m PR is 6.75 from early last year, and I believe this was only his 2nd indoor track meet on record.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08IAAF lists a previous best of 6.24 at 55m a year ago.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
No its not. No one judges starts on a video from across the field. The starter knows when he pulled the trigger and if the kid moved, he pulls it again. In a hand timed race, the timers go on the smoke. If you knew sprinting, you'd understand the comment about the smoke. Clearly you don't
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
No need to be an ass.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
Doesn't seem to bother you does it?
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08That's a blatant false start, no arguing there. The smoke appears, then he moves in one frame 0.03s. The whole field reacts between 0.13 and 0.16 which is normal. He gained at least a tenth on that flyer. Who ratifies these records? It's a real shame if this stands.

Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Here's a link to a slo-mo replay. Clearly he's not out till after the smoke.

Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08
Thanks for that. Absolutely a clean start.
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08I totally agree.
It is a pity that there http://www.halfmiletiming.com/Datafiles ... 2/Results/ is no RT
Re: Marvin Bracy (HS, Florida) 55m 6.08Hard to know what you'd do in a real-life setting of course, but if I were the starter i'm guessing that I would have called it a falsie. And watching it in slo-mo only confirms that feeling.
But what the slo-mo does confirm is something I thought I saw the first time through in regular speed: the FS gun should have gone off for the guy in red two lanes to his inside, who initiates a roll before Bracy blasts away. Bottom line for me is I (personally) would take an NFL replay approach to this: needs to be incontrovertible evidence to overturn the decision made on the field, and i don't think I'm seeing that.
