Given the unbelievable amount of energy etc etc you put into compiling this information I feel almost like a heretic for suggesting that you might need to consider removing Vena and replacing him for the youth 5.4kg with Jacko given Jacko's 22.31m is further than Vena's 22.15m

Same basis that Michael Carters 24.77m for the 5.4kg is better than Jacko's 24.45kg

Youth Records
5 kg (11 lb) -- 24.45m (80-02) Jacko Gill (NZL) 12.19.11
5.4 kg (12 lb) -- 22.15m (72-08) Nick Vena (USA) 06.04.09
6 kg (13.2 lb) -- 22.31m (73-02) Jacko Gill (NZL) 12.05.11

Junior Records
5 kg (11 lb) -- 24.77m (81-03) Michael Carter (USA) 06.16.79

These were my predictions for Jacko as at 1 June 2010, 28 March 2011 and 1 Jan 2012 respectively that I sent to his Mum and Dad, Nerida and Walter. The red brackets are his actuals for that age. I am beginning to suspect that I may have under predicted for his 7.26kg for 2012. I am confident he will make the final 8 but after that who knows. We should get a better indication in February and March.

Predictions for Jacko Gill:

(at 1 June 2010)
5.00kg - 24.50m @ 16 [24.45] - 25.20m @ 17
6.00kg - 22.00m @ 16 [22.31] - 23.00m @ 17 - 24.00m @ 18 - 25.00m @ 19
7.26kg - 20.00m @ 16 [20.38] - 21.00m @ 17 - 22.00m @ 18 - 23.00m @ 19

(at 28 March 2011)
5.00kg - 24.50m @ 16 [24.45] - 25.50m @ 17
6.00kg - 22.80m @ 16 [22.31] - 23.50m @ 17 - 24.00m @ 18 - 25.00m @ 19
7.26kg - 20.00m @ 16 [20.38] - 21.00m @ 17 - 22.00m @ 18 - 23.00m @ 19

(at 01 January 2012)
5.00kg - 25.80m @ 17
6.00kg - 24.00m @ 17 - 25.00m @ 18 - 25.50m @ 19
7.26kg - 21.30m @ 17 - 22.30m @ 18 - 23.20m @ 19

Jacko of course does not qualify for Youth lists this year (just age 17 lists for the first 354 days)

best Youth in NZ going into 2012 is Kyle van der Merwe 8.8.95 18.00m (also 15.02 6kg)

Brzozowski started the indoor season with 19.48 (6k) last weekend.
Four other Polish juniors have already gone over 18 meters with the 6k this season - Patryk Ocypa 18.38, Artur Gorlewski 18.16, Dawid Krzyżan 18.14 and Andrzej Regin 18.05. All four of them are first-year juniors (i.e. born in 1994).

And Crouser, while not a Junior, makes the age-19 lists for the first 352 days.

Good call... and thanks for the catch/ help. I still need to weed out some non-Juniors as the season progresses.

It is official. Jacko beats Adam Nelson.

The first of the big guns falls to the young hot shot. Nelson gets 2 votes, 25 points in "mumpboys" ongoing mental torture session of determing all time favourite athletes.

I can say this as I voted for Jacko and he has yet to appear. That means he has at least 2 votes and more than 25 points.

OMG; the amount of time I am wasting by checking in several times a day to see if "mumpboy" has put up his latest listing.

Can a 17-year-old body really handle this kind of stress?
I can't help but wonder how soon his body is going to say enough is enough.
Slow and steady wins the race.

Seems like Gill has been in an 'active rest' schedule for much of the fall... and now is pointing Olympics... just training and seeing how much he can build before breaking down.
All he does is train... that includes as much rest/ recovery as he wants/ requires.
One does not read about his clubbing, vacationing, partying and the like... not that is doesn't happen... but if it is he's quiet about it.

There are reasons that prodigies don't often make the transition to senior stars. Let's hope this doesn't do him in.

With a 75' [12-lber] to his credit, I would think he'd be mid-60s now with the 16. Crouser should move well past 65' soon also.

I never expect anything from a HSer who has only 12-pound marks until I see some 16-pound results. One event where predictably is off the chart.

Has anyone done any kind of stat study of how HS 70-fters have done with the big ball? I seem to recall a norm of an initial 10' drop. That may have only been for the hi-viz ones.

Has anyone done any kind of stat study of how HS 70-fters have done with the big ball? I seem to recall a norm of an initial 10' drop. That may have only been for the hi-viz ones.

As long as I can remember, going back to 1957, I have always felt there was about a 10' difference between the 12 and 16 pound shots. You are correct in that Vena's "Super Star" days are over.

Especially with Vena... who avoided the bigger ball and shut his 2011 outdoor season down early and avoided all 6kg comps (PanAms).

we ran charts a c ouple of times in the '70s and '80s which proved two things: the better guys with the 16 ended up waaayyy beyond their 12-pound marks. And the better guys with the 12 typically never matched their HS distance. Ever.

As a really quick look for a "norm on "initial" drop, let's look at the recent preps not named Crouser (who is obviously going to be a special-case chart buster). In '09 there were three seniors over 70: Baillio threw 75-4 3/4; as a frosh 61-7 1/2. Saenz threw 72-6 3/4; as frosh 60-5 3/4. Finley threw 71-8 3/4; as frosh 64-9 1/4.

So that's (round numbers) drops of 14 ft, 12 ft and 7ft. I'm not hanging my hat on any 10-foot "norm."

I suspect it has a ton to do with how big you are (and, perhaps even more importantly) how big your hands are.

I would say the lack of improvement with the 16-pounder has to do a few things:
• The quality of instruction an athlete has received as a high schooler. You see this with some female throwers. They come out of great system and have taken 10s of thousands of throws and lifted tons of weights before high school graduation.
• The amount of natural maturation the athlete's body goes through after high school. The best way to find meters of improvement through natural growth by throwing at least into their late-20s.
• Type of special energy... if you're lightning quick with no power, great with the smal ball, not so great with the big ball.

Many of the high school stars would not improve much after the age 18 or 19 even if they stayed with a 12-pounder.

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was looking for - your statnut credentials are impeccable. I concur in your denial of a 10' norm.

I think the chart showed only one shot putter in the boy's high school top-10 list was also in the men's USA top-10 list... Mr Carter.

My reference of 10' was in the same period. I still hold that Vena is yesterdays news.

Venna? I don't like writing anyone off at 18/19 years of age, it's about passion, choices and luck, ie not having a career ending injury.

I remember a few years ago there was a big tall kid running crazy times in the quarter mile at 15/16, they reckoned he could break Micheal Johnson's record then he started partying and they said he was gone, doesn't even run the quarter anymore, heard he took up the hundred though, they called him the lightening bolt....

You never know..

Crouser's not a Junior anymore, but the 66-07 was accompanied by a 66-06 as well.
