I have to say that I share this sentiment. If you only wanted YOUR favorites, you could have spared us the time & trouble.

Hilarious. Nice to be accused of sexism in a rather stupid pointless thread.

Had to double check my list.

Evenly split men and women! :D

And number 21 would have been a woman!

Wow you lot are touchy !!

It was a light hearted comment about the lack of women in some people's choices, there's not need to get so defensive (unless you're feeling guilty :P )

There will be a lot of discussion after all the results are announced so be ready to defend your choices :D

Thanks for all the entries the more we get the better the whole exercise will work.

Also if you genuinly don't have any preference between your 1-20 then fine but don't forget your placement will reflect in the final rankings.

My list shows a lot of personal bias, as it should, since it is my list. Some break-down.

9 men, 11 women
1 active athlete (a woman)
12 track, 7 field, 1 both
5 from pre-1960's
8 Americans, 3 Czechs, 2 Slovaks, 1 Pole, 1 Cuban, 1 French, 1 Russian, 1 Ethiopian, 1 German, 1 born Czech>becoming an American by marriage.

Just like some others, many names on my list I could easily exchanged for pretty much equal favorites.

Marlow, let's not forget Lonewolf, Avante and Conor. I think the balance is tipped heavily in the opposite direction to me 8-)

The idiosyncratic nature of this list made it fun. Favorites, my own criteria. Just started listing names and came up with 31. Wasn't too hard to separate the top 20 from the others. I'm curious to see what names will pop up often. On my list, probably more Kenyans, more 80s athletes, more multi-eventers, more marathoners than on others.

My breakdown;

5 men, 15 women
8 active, 12 inactive (I'm unsure about two, who might be attempting comebacks next year)
14 track and road, 6 field and multi-eventers
Mid-1970s onwards
4 Brits, 4 Romanians, 5 Russians, the rest - a scatter

Just sent my list. Could have easily listed 30 athletes, had real trouble whittling it down to 20 (especially going from 21 to 20!) but I got there in the end.

10 men, 10 women
10 track, 10 field
11 active, 7 retired, 2 kinda inbetween
4 Brits, 4 Americans, 12 other different nations

This is exactly why such a "favorites" poll has such potential interest: the enduring meaning that largely forgotten athletes might have to individual fans. It's absolutely not the case that favorites should be merely the names with the most Olympic gold medals. What a deadly dull sport that would be.

There are 4.... Torontonians.
