Any Alan Webb updates?Maybe AW stuff needs to go to the "Historical" forum?
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?Dr. Jay... I've been waiting along with you for someone to respond here. Maybe Alan Webb is going to be under the radar for a change. But I'd like to know what he is up to.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates? With so many good middle distance runners and long distance ones as well, he is no longer the outlier or great white hope. Two US 1500 medals this year, two more than Webb has. Thus, not as much focus etc.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?I, for one, hope to see the Alan Webb of 2007 in 2012.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?I hope to see the Matt Centrowitz of 2011 in 2012.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?Looks like Webb is still under a Nike contract. He is making an appearance on Nov. 26.

Re: Any Alan Webb updates?I'm not holding out much hope for Webb's return to 2007 form. However, I think Centrowitz got lucky this year. If that race was run 10 times, the result would be different 10 times and almost everyone in the final would end up with a medal in one of them. Webb on the other hand, proved that he could race a fast or slow pace and still have a devastating kick, more like Lagat or El G who have dominated. Unfortunately, he never has done it in a championship outside of the US. I'm still a fan but just not very optimistic for Webb's return.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?Centro is the anti-Webb, a smooth striding gladiator.
Shocked if Webb comes back.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates? The page has been turned. Five years ago, every Webb thread went on and on and on...now, it's hard to summon up the energy to say anything at all.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
It's kind of like being a fan of a mediocre college football team (which I know something about). You get burned hoping so many times that eventually you give up. If it happens great, but don't waste energy getting excited beforehand and you won't have a big letdown either.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Centro took too many scalps for it to be luck (only). He appears to be race-savvy beyond his years. I can only remember one race where Webb seemed to have the savvy part and the racing part in sync - his Stade de Paris 1500 victory.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
I'd say it went beyond that - he was pretty monstrous in every pre-WC race during that 2007 season, other than Prefontaine (e.g., Reebok Grand Prix). He also had some very good finishes in races in other seasons where he was outclassed, but still raced fine.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Ha Ha .Just don't have the energy to fight pro or con for Allan Webb.Like the "5 Hour Energy commercial song singing "I'm Tied"(tired).
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
But there is no "fight" to be engaged in; that's the issue.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?Man I just hope he's laying low and training through all this just to show his naysayers up.
Also hope he's not injured. He's a cool kid with tons of talent and desire. I'd say he made decisions that lead to an unstable training environment but I wasn't walking in his shoes so who knows what happened... I'd say head on back up to Oregon and tap into what helped Centro, another 1500 stud, succeed this year. Wouldn't it be great to have those two in top form at the Olympics? What was Centro's last lap time at the WC's?

Re: Any Alan Webb updates?Like pretty much everyone else, I have no idea if Webb will come back to 2007 form, or if his career is over, or if it will be something in between, etc., etc. And, like everyone else, I have no news updates on him. All that stated, I note in any case that one of the other current items on page 1 of this forum concerns the end of Vigilante's coaching career at UVa. This is Webb-related, if what was announced in March was accurate: That is, when Webb left Salazar's group in Oregon, it was announced that Webb was moving to Virginia to be closer to home and to work w Vigilante. I have no idea if he actually was/is working w Vigilante, but if he was/is, then this news would seem likely to change that situation.
And that's all the almost entirely hypothetical Webb-related news I have. I do wish Webb well in whatever it is he's doing. It was hard enough for Jim Ryun to live up to being Jim Ryun; I wouldn't wish the pressure of being the next Jim Ryun on anyone. (And perhaps just as well, thinking of this, that Verzbicas has gone on to the Triathlon world.) Kind of like any number of musical performers in the 1970s (more or less) that were saddled with either being the next Bob Dylan or the next Beatles, which was hard enough for Dylan and the Beatles themselves. (If by slim chance you're a youngster reading this, and these names don't mean anything, just ask your History teacher or your grandparents...
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?I don't think Webb will ever be in 2007 form again, but I think he still hs some good, competitive years in him. I hope he can comeback with a good, solid year in 2012...will be interesting to see what he wil do.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Or a Cubs fan (fortunately I am not.)
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
A low blow! Next you will be talking about Cutler's thumb!
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
This was a HS race. Webb greeted runners. Here's a pic.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?A message board thread on another site is reporting that his wife is pregnant--due in June, right around the time of the Olympic Trials.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
She announced it on her facebook page. Due 6/22 http://www.facebook.com/juliawebb83/posts/823615790925
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Wow, what bad timing: Maybe miss the Trials altogether or try to compete with the stress of all this on his mind. I know these things can happen no matter what precautions, but it's like the guy keeps shooting himself in the foot. [Or, in this case, shooting something somewhere.] .
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Holy Smokes Brother! Centro can definitely run with the big boys. Centro turning pro is the way to go! And I still think Webb is laying low so watch out. He's probably pulling a George Young, who's old enough to remember him?' training in secret at altitude, (Well I hope Webb's doing that) not surfacing until he has to for qualifying reasons. And if anybody gets the obscure 'George Young training at altitude' reference you are old. Like me. P.S. And I was at the 72 trials in Eugene and saw the epic 5,000 between George and Pre. What a day for track fans that was!
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Congratulations Mom and Dad!!!!
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Having a child is not shooting yourself in the foot. Sheesh! Are you even a parent? Look man, sorry to be harsh but family always comes first. Running is just another sport. Whatever those two decide to do in terms of running should be fully supported by everyone and not judged, which no one has any right to do by the way. Besides, their child is going to be born after the trials so relax.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Not when it's your business, your livelihood, the way you put food on the table for that child. If (!) he wants to continue as a viable force in this sport, he's going to have to 'juggle' this admittedly more important part of his life till he does take care of business. I was deployed overseas when my second child was born. Being in the military was a ' choice' that I knew would interfere with my 'real' life. I think this may be similar to what Webb may need to do.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Aside from seeing him pose for pictures with aspiring HS runners for his sponsor we really don't know what his plans are for taking care of his family. He's probably made some good coin so far in his running career and may have invested, stashed or done likewise with those funds. Does his wife work and if so will she go back? Who knows. I stand by my initial conclusion, family first, running is just another sport. Anything else is speculation I'd think.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
I thought her due date was right before the trials.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Opps... from what I read you are correct and I had a Senior moment.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Absolutely no one but you is even hinting athletics on any level is more important than family. You're arguing a non-issue. Having to possibly miss either the birth of your child or your last chance at making an Olympic team (and all the contract money that goes with it--as stated above, and which I assumed everyone here was inherently smart enough to grasp without my saying--which, BTW, is what PROVIDES for that family) is potentially a no-win situation. To (continually) put yourself into a no-win situation is to shoot yourself in the foot, specific details aside. And skipping any cutural machizmo crap, he is at least 50% responsible for this happening; his wife didn't just "get herself pregnant." If he ends up shot in the foot, it's also his hand on the trigger. But again, as I said, these things happen. And no one who shoots themselves in the foot EVER intends to do so. Even as they are doing it. .
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Well now if he had kept his hand on the trigger this might not be an issue.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates? The solution is obvious. USATF gets with Webb and the Mrs. and NBC or whoever and they create a reality TV show. Tie it in with the OT, maybe increase the drama for all involved by making the dates of the OT flexible and highly dependent on when Junior arrives, thus pissing off other athletes and their agents/spouses/families. NIKE gets involved, Vin, Alberto, maybe a cameo by Usain. Pre's name is invoked endlessly. Best marketing move ever by USATF.
Re: Any Alan Webb updates?
Well now if he had kept his hand on the trigger this might not be an issue.
LOL! [I suppose I should have said "finger on the trigger" when quoting the cliche', but guessed that might have taken us to a place the moderators wouldn't want us to go.] .
