In terms of top100 averages, 2009 was the best year ever in 100m, 200m, marathon and 110mh. Worst since 1981 in hammer.

Thanks to the wonderful data posted by Mikly one can tests various questions regarding Track and field performance through the years. The idea here is to examine the general trends in track and field rather than in specific events. In order to achieve this goal we need to change the marks into scores. I use a simple method to transfer the results into scores. I began by calculating the overall average of the top 20 performances in each event throughout the 109 years in Mikly data. Then, I calculate the standard deviation over same period. Finally I calculate the score for each year using the formula: (overall mean - Mean in a year)/standard deviation For example in the 100m the overall mean is 10.553 (I added 0.24 to results before 1972), the standard deviation is 0.421. Thus if in 1901 the top 20 average was 11.405 then the score is : (10.553-11.405)/0.421 = -2 Similarly the score for 2009 with an average top 20 of 9.927 is: (10.553-9.927)/0.421 = 1.5 I can use similar method for the rest of the events and therefore can examine general trends in T&F.
So what can we answer with this data. Due to time and laziness constraint (and because I need to download each event separately) I used only sprints for this analysis. Is there a drop is progression rate in recent years? Overall there is hardly an improvement in the last decade. This happen before only in the 40s (War World 2). So either we are approaching the limit of men or PEDs…
Is there an Olympic effect? Athletes usually reach their best in major championship years. This suggests that the performance in the Olympic years should be better than non-Olympic years. I compare between the average score in Olympic years and non-Olympic years. I excluded all the years of both war world from this comparison. The average score in Olympic years is 0.22 compared with only 0.08. From the previous post you can see than this improvement is roughly worth 7 years of progression. But is it still true in the age of World Championship and Golden league? I use the same comparison for Olympic and non-Olympic years from 1976 when world cup was introduced. The results are 1.14 compared with 1.10. This suggests that Olympic is still special in these days of professional track and field. Yet, the effect is much smaller. Finally I examine weather non-championship years since 1976 have really poor performances. Results suggest that performances in these years (like the upcoming 2010) are poorer than championship years by 0.04 (1.12 compared with 1.08).
I am not sure that you can do the statistics that way. Is the assumption of the same underlying population valid when the population to draw from is so much bigger, both in a given country (size of population, those eligible to race) and the number of countries actively participating. In addition, more then the hand time differential has changed -- starting blocks, tracks, wind readings, ... I think that regression analysis will handle some changes better than some of the tests of means, etc., but then I am an economist.

I looked at the graphs and it seems that there is a mild regression hump in every event above 1500 except the marathon, which has a big hump.
Due to Sweden, not participating in the war. They had exceptional runners at that time, in particular Hägg and Andersson. In 1945, for instance, there were 14 Swedish in the top 20 of 1500m.

I first use regression analysis but I was not sure that using interaction variables in T&F forum is a good idea. Except for the last test (the difference between championship and non-championship years) the differences are statistically significant at the 5% level. I do not see the relation between the population and the method that I am using. The Only big assumption that I am taking is that the progression in all events throughout the last 109 years is similar. I also don't quite understand how starting blocks,tracks and so on will effect my results. Are you arguing that these innovations are (partly) responsible for the improvement in the last century and the decrease in improvement is because the innovations stopped in the last decade???

The US does not get proportionately more entries, which alters the interpretation of such statistics.

Basically anyone, independent on the country, is allowed to compete and thereby has a chance to make it to the lists. But it may have an indirect influence in a way that the top performances are often achieved at championships. Apparently, this has been an issue in the early years, which show distinct Olympic year peaks.

Note that for the vault there was a rule change on the equipment and on the vaulter. The pegs were made shorter and the bar ends were made to be half circles, while the Volzing of the bar was outlawed. I am not sure how big this is in effect but I have seen a number of vaults that might have been good under the old rules.

The same practically goes for the middle distances (and for the last 20 years also for 400m/400mh), despite the rise of Africa. Perhaps they are not physically that superior, after all, as the dominance could as well be explained by the loss of interest/motivation in developed countries.

IMHO, you see the peak in '96 because you still had a lot of vaulters that grew up in the Soviet training system that now had international opportunities. Prior to the break up of the USSR, they fought for 3 slots on the Soviet team. Now there were a dozen plus spots available. Of course, this curtailed quickly as these guys aged. There was no organized support system in any of these countries...even in Russia. The men's vault there is like the NCAAs now.
