Alaska Plane Crash

Postby Double R Bar » Wed Aug 11, 2010 7:46 am

One hundred ten years ago today (Wednesday) our birthday athlete was born. This man won two Olympic gold medals and two Olympic silver medals and competed in three Olympic Games.

Julia Child, Otis Chandler, and this Olympic champion all graduated from the same school in Pasadena, California.

Our birthday athlete was known to wear silk in competition and even appeared in movies as himself. Known for an unusual finish, this Olympic gold medalist died in a plane crash in Alaska during World War II.

Can you name this famous champion?

Your athlete went to Pasadena High School, a public school. Neither Julia Child nor Otis Chandler graduated from that school; they both attended private schools.

Obviously dj already knows the answer. It was somewhere in the Aleutian Islands that Charley Paddock's plane went down in during WW2.

KDFINE, you got it. Happy birthday today to Charlie Paddock, who went to high school in the same city as did Julia Childs and Otis Chandler. Paddock twice took the silver medal at 200 meters in the Olympics.

Just found this footage of Paddock's 1920 Antwerp 100m Gold performance. As has been mentioned Charlie gave his life in service to his country during WW2.

The Charley Paddock Zoo is in Atascadero CA, midway between Paso Robles and San Luis Obisbo on H'way 101. Paddock was famous for that horizontal dive to the tape.

The SLO Football Team went down in a planecrash in the late 50s. Vic Hall was a worldclass 440 man who played End, now WR. I loaned Vic my Indoor Adidas for the LA Invitational at the then new Sports Arena. such a loss...
