I thought I was familiar with most of the "odd" college nicknames, but this is a new one for me.
South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
Hardrockers
Would love to hear their school song |

Grade school- The Trojans
High school- The Scots
Community college- The Bulldogs
College- The Grizzlies and later- The Gators
So 2 humans and 3 animals. |

| Possibly the best ever is at a HS in Cleveland...the Glenville Tarblooders. Supposedly developed out of a chant of "we'll beat the tar and blood out of you." For some unknown reason their mascot is represented as a robot. |

I was a Hornet, a Viking, a Tiger, and a Falcon. I now coach Spartans. Apparently being warlike or carnivorous are the qualifications.
I always like that old NBA team, the Providence Steamrollers. Ohio Wesleyan's Battling Bishops make me think of an inappropriate euphemism. Lubbock Christian's teams are the Chaparrals. There's an Ohio HS where I get a chuckle every time their cheerleaders exhort them to "Go Quakers! Fight! Fight! Fight!"
The strangest I've come across is Williams College, whose teams are the Ephs (pronounced "eefs"). What the heck is an Eph? It's a shortening of Ephraim Williams, the college's founder. |

HS Wildcats
College Tar Heels
Med school Blue Devils
Back then my main elementary school didn't have a mascot, but the YMCA teams the school fielded took college mascot names, as did all the other Gra-Y schools' teams. Our third grade football team was the St. Matthews Seminoles. We played the Gators, the Bears, the Volunteers, the Hawkeyes, the Horned Frogs, and others, and in basketball we were the Bonnies and played the Buckeyes, the Hurricanes, the Cavaliers, and more. |

Cairo HS in Georgia: the Syrupmakers (often shortened to Makers). Girls teams are called the Syrup Maids (Maids).
From wiki:
In 1986 ESPN chose "Syrupmakers" as the No. 1 nickname for a high school sports team. In 2009, ESPN's Sports Center selected the Syrupmakers as their number one mascot in the high school heritage catageory. |

From Aberdeen, WA. (logging country)...the Grays Harbor College "Chokers".
I am not making this up. |

Maybe it's just a small town Texas thing, but do other junior highs base their mascot off of the HS mascot? For example, our HS mascot was the Bulldogs but the JHS was the Bullpups.
The best of these is Gonzales with the Apaches and Papooses. |

Probably a small town thing, where there is a 1:1 correspondence between jr/middle and high schools.
That being said, Loyola Marymount U's teams are the Lions, while Loyola High School's teams are the Cubs (although there is no direct connection between the schools, other than the Jesuit affiliation). |

Very, very wrong.
The Lord Jeffs are Amherst, which is Williams's arch-rival. |

| Perhaps not unique, but I've always been amused that the Frankfort Indiana HS team is the "Hot Dogs". |

| My elementary and junior high didn't have nicknames. You may find this quaint, but those buildings were actaully viewed as places where you got an education, not played games. |

My local university (Burnaby, BC Canada) is nicknamed the "Clansmen" . I'm not sure who or what their mascot is.

New Orleans Privateers
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Texas A&I is now Texas A&M - Kingsville, and is the alma mater of Darrell Green.
New York Violets
Canisius Golden Griffins
San Diego Toreros
Charlie Choker
Not far from where I grew up: University of Redlands Bulldogs and Redlands High School Terriers
The Frankfort (Indiana) High School mascot:
RISD's ice hockey team is the Nads, but their basketball team is the Balls. "When the heat is on, the Balls stick together." Their cheerleaders are the Jockstraps. (Of course, they're athletics supporters.) Finally, their unofficial mascot is Scrotie.
Endicott Gulls (Evidently, they're "powerless".)
Now politically correct Southeast Missouri State Redhawks, formerly Indians (men) and Otahkians (women)
Montana State - Northern: Lights (men) and Skylights (women)
Centre Colonels (Evidently, they're not officially praying, except for funds.)
No doubt College of the Atlantic has plenty of black flies, but evidently the Black Flies are defunct.
The Simon Fraser Clan take their nickname from their namesake's Scottish clan. Their mascot is McFogg the Dog. The university is the alma mater of Debbie Brill. |

When I attended Oklahoma A&M College 1949, sports teams were simply called the Aggies. I don't think they became the Cowboys until OAMC became Oklahoma State University in 1957.
Ironically, in recent years, Wyoming University copyrighted/trademarked the "Pistol Pete" logo that OAMC had been using since about 1921 but never bothered to register. OSU had some sort of court settlement and reportedly had/has to pay royalties to Wyoming for use of their own logo, which is based on a real 19th Century cowboy/marshall named Frank Eaton who homesteaded and lived at Perkins, Oklahoma, ten miles south of Stillwater. He was a fixture at OSU homecoming parades for many years until his death in the (early 90s?) The Pistol Pete mascot head is a very good likeness of the real Pistol Pete, except the real Pisol Pete wore braids under his cowboy hat.
Eaton is famous for tracking down and killing five men who he watched kill his father when he was a young boy.
(I could look up those dates but already have this typed and don't know how to check without losing this post.) |
