On the t-and-f discussion list it was reported that Kevin Toth had a 22.64 shot put (I believe it was Kansas?).
Wowie...
I wonder which American can beat him this weekend to become the USATF Athlete of the Week - and what kind of performance that would need.
And since this is an international forum also: can't we introduce the unofficial worldwide-athlete-of-the-week vote? Moderators/editors, maybe even an idea for a message related poll of some kind?
Anyway, a beautifull season is on its way,
All the best,
WK
Big Green Book says 74'3.5" .. That should hold up as performance of the week ... Guess that would make him athlete of the week as well on either side of the pond ...
According to the Mt. SAC website, the men's hammer was won by Travis Nutter with a throw of
96.89 (317-10). Now I'd say that would be the performance of the century, if it weren't a type, which unfortunately, it undoubtedly is.
Kansas Relays website has Toth's result as 74'4.5" (22.67), which bounces him to #6 A-T. Felix's mark is amazing but I'll take Toth's heave any day of the week. It looks like Felix's mark moves her to into the top 6 performers A-T but not in the top 10 performances. There's plenty of running left in the season for her to move up.
In regards to the athlete of the week I agree with Toth as the male, I was making my pitch for Felix as the female athlete of the week. I don't know I had to choose between the two of them.
OK, WK earned the honor of being the first guy on my dren list; but he also becomes the first to be pardoned, as a reward for a very good suggestion: why shouldn't T&FN choose Athletes Of The Week (world and U.S.)?
The previous poster was pretty blunt in taking USATF to task. While he/she had a point, we can't blame the folks in Indy too much for some of their "off the wall" choices. They're just playing with the hand they were dealt, being mandated by Congress to be all things for all people in the track world.
This means their occasional handing-out of AOW awards to people that those of us more interested in the elite end of things can't fathom.
USATF's pickle certainly does nothing to enhance the sport's image, or aid it in trying to convince the nation's newspaper and TV people that ours is a "real" sport. You don't get Major League Baseball sending out press releases noting that some Little League is the POW do you?
So, becuase we think track needs to be hyping the elite end of the sport all it can, we'll follow up on this suggestion and create an AOW program of our own.
It isn't worth AOW but it is worth noting that Shalane Flanagan ran 4:13 (1500) and 15:47 (5000) Saturday at ACCs. I can't wait for another Fleshman v. Flanagan race. Both know how to compete.
