Trotter and Wineberg's spots are certainly no gimmes. Hastings being a pro now does not have the collegiate grind to fry her by the end of June, and the crowd of veterans and newbys in the 50-point, or better, range should make things very interesting.

As for the WR, I've said it before - that thing will never fall until there are TWO teams capable of running in that very rare air, and pushing each other. It will never happen solo.

i forgot about hasting , she should be able to run 49:5 or faster , she has good 200m speed as well could very well be the 1 to stop Sanya Richard. As for a 2nd team to push the american maybe the jamaican Novleve, Sherika Williams , Melaine Walker, Sherone Simpson and a few other who can run 50-point should be able to run in the 3:17 range if at full strength

Well put, Guru. For those of us old enough to remember '88, just remember who was anchoring the USSR & USA teams...Bryzgina & Flo-Jo, with anchor legs of 47.9 & 48.1 ! And that was after solid legs of no worse than 50.

Gonna be awhile before that is touched, I believe. High 3:16's, yes, possible. But low 3:15? The spirit of Flo-Jo will have to descend on the stadium!

Just remember that 3:15.0 is an average of 48.75! (with one of those coming out of the blocks)

It's definitely doable with good weather (clean air??) As I recall in the USA record, which is not that far off the WR, Gwen Torrence started out of the blocks with a 49.0. Felix might have to start off with that or a little better. The key might be a third runner being able to put in a 49 split. Lashinda?

Gwen Torrence wasn't in the race of the AR...the AR was set with FloJo anchoring a team of Denean Howard, Diane Dixon, Valerie Brisco as the first 3 legs, respectively. Time: 3:15.51

Somewhat counterintuitively...I think frontloading the relay is the way to break the record.

And as guru stated having another high caliber team (Jamaica/Russia) on their game pushing the US is a must.

To break it with what we have I'd approach it this way (in order)...

Sanya (on 1st because she's run 48.70 out of the blocks and it will take a low 48 mid-high AT LEAST from the blocks to break it..no one else has done that from the blocks).

Felix (the phenominal 48.0 split on 2nd speaks for itself...IMO a standing/running start benefits an athlete like Felix moreso than others.)

DeeDee/Mo Henderson (tough call here but I have no idea why the US puts DeeDee on first leg. Yes she's run sub 50 but someone as long as her would definitely benefit from a rolling start. If Henderson returns to '04-06 form then watch out for her).

Hastings (a RESTED Hastings on anchor. Hastings doesn't have much international experience running rounds...so I'm speaking of a warmed up well rested Hastings. I think she could go low 49...easy).

Wineburg, Hennegan for alternates unless it's for Sanya or Felix; in that case...no record.

Torrence gave the US a 1.8 second lead after the first leg, which shrunk like a grasshopper's pecker after sex, to 1.7 seconds after leg 2. Let's have some fun and suppose Felix starts. She's as good as Gwen Torrence, comparing 48.0r to 49.0rblocks. Deux et trois need to jointly produce a middle 800 at least a second faster than the Shtoot-gartengirlens. If Richards is in her best form ever, and ~ 10,000 fans positioned fortuitously around the end of the final bend all blow as hard as they can, and/or we get a Canberra-aira breeze, then it's a piece of cake.

Maybe you are right after all Guru. I fully expect the Chinese to unveil 4 eager Uyghurs previously unseen to produce the requisite challenge.

I don't know about Edwards, but certainly Shareese Woods is showing to-date that she might be a possible for relay duty in Beijing. She held her on and then some against Hastings at Texas on Saturday.
