Return to Things Not T&F

I've got this little test on Saturday (19th) . . .

A place for the discussion of all things not closely related to the sport and its competitive side. (Locked down several times a year during the major championships)

Just got my results (midnight EST)! I did roughly what I was averaging on my practice exams, which was MUCH higher than I expected after leaving the real thing!

So enough? Remember to apply to the schools you want to go to as well as the schools you think you can get into.

Yeah, I scored ~9 points higher than the national average (it's out of 45 points), and my total puts me at the 90th percentile internationally. I'll be applying broadly of course, as there's no such thing as a "safety" med school.

Congrats Bisonhurdler.
Did you score high enough to advise me what to do about my post orthoscopic surgery arthritic bone-on- bone left knee?

Just an update: Today I received my first acceptance (to the University of Maryland School of Medicine)!

And lonewolf, I'll defer that question to someone who has legit MD/DO credentials :). Also, it took me over a year to get back to you, so hopefully the knee's doing better since then . . .

Congratulations Bison. Maybe you will apply/come to Wisconsin; if so, stop by... (and you can get academic advice from Pego, although it has been a while since he went through that process. UW has a pretty good second-year student who was the top Academic All-American last year while competing in the decathlon (he NH'd at Big Tens and still finished 4th, would of had a score about 7700+).

I know, I was doing the announcing for that very meet ;).

Thanks to you (and to Pego, and to anyone else who should happen to stop by and offer any kind words). I didn't apply to any Wisconsin schools, but there's always the possibility of ending up there for residency in a few years!

Bump.

Nearly 6 years later, and here I am as a soon-to-be-graduated MD. Back in 2006 I was just hoping against hope that I could score well enough on the MCAT to gain admission to any medical school . . . and ended up with 7 or 8 acceptances (I can't recall exactly anymore). As many know, I ended up choosing Maryland, and things have turned out very well for me. I ended up performing above and beyond any of my expectations, performing at the top of my class and scoring >260 on both Step I and Step II of the USMLE licensing exams. I matched into Dermatology (which, incidentally, is the hardest or second hardest specialty into which to match, depending on who you ask) at Penn State, which was my #1 choice, and will be graduating ranked 2nd (I believe) overall in my medical school class.

I post this now not to brag, but to update people on my progress and to let you guys know that things have worked out for me. I ended up choosing derm (after an initial infatuation with orthopedics) partially based on a family history of several relatives with skin cancers (including melanoma . . . we're all of Irish/Polish descent). I'm looking forward to perhaps going into a Mohs Surgery fellowship after residency.

Anyway, here's the link to the Penn State derm resident page with my information updated:

Yes BH, congrats. Now I can truly welcome you to the club  . You are graduating exactly 50 years after I did.

I just looked back through the thread and noticed the bit about announcing at the Big Ten meet. You are now affiliated with Penn State; back to your undergrad stomping grounds as well. I will be officiating the PV at the Big Ten meet next month together with the long-time Penn State official (Dan Curran) that does the PV; do you know him?

and

Congratulations!

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I didn't mean to desert the thread immediately, just got distracted. It's been an exciting time (I also just got engaged).

Penn State's medical campus is actually about ~1.5 hours away from State College (it's in Hershey, PA). That said, it's still exciting to be a part of Penn State again. Great to hear about the Big Ten gig, I'm sure you'll have a good time. I only know Dan in passing (I've seen him a few times with all the other guys at officials' meetings and such), but if he spends his weekends regularly devoting his time to PSU T&F, he's ok in my book!

Congratulations!! And contrary to lonewolf's assertion, I'm not sure I recall a lot of goofing off from you here the last couple of years.....yep, looked at your posts and it's far from Marlow-esque. Gotta get with the goofing off program!
