I doubt if steroids were used by baseball players in Mays's day. Amphetamines are another matter. No idea if he took uppers, but I'm sure there was no testing for that stuff then.

It was a joke tafnut- in the early 1960's, the LSU Tigers were one of the few major college football teams that even had a regular weight training regimen- almost no premier baseballers lifted. Ted Williams was big on pushups, wrist rolls, and "cals". Basketball players were told weights would ruin their shooting form. Wrestlers, track's weight throwers, football linemen, and rehabbing footballers w/ knee injuries were the first to regulary strength train (i.e. Tucker Fredrickson, Namath and Sayers, 1965 NFL draftees who did leg lifts in therapy). Jim Bouton broke the silence on MLB'ers use of "greenies".

When LSU started getting results on the field, and some articles were produced about their regimen, college and h.s coaches took notice (and supplements entered the picture, some clean, some less natural).

Willie didn't need juice- dig the guns:

(which is why Mays hit 51 hrs. at age 24, and 52 at age 34, and Barry couldn't break 50 until he was 37)

I believe it was tandfman who responded, not tafnut. You can tell the difference because tandfman is a guy who makes many salient points while consistently being the voice of reason on every thread he enters, whereas tafnut is a raving lunatic with a T&FN message board OCD complex which forces him to inanely post multiple times on every thread in existence regardless of his lack of knowledge or competence, all the while believing that the 1600 meters is the greatest invention since New Coke . . . :P

Amphetamines are as much a part of baseball as chewing tobacco and sunflowers seeds. What's new?
